LA MIRADA, Calif. --- As we finish up February and roll into March it becomes national championship season for quite a few of Biola's athletic programs. Swimming & Diving and Indoor Track & Field get the good times rolling as both programs compete at their championships this first week of March.
Â
It's the 12
th year that Head Coach
Eddie Shepard has visited the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Swimm & Diving National Championships and first year the competition has been held in Columbus, Georgia.
Â
Shepard took 21 of his student-athletes to compete for national accolades at this year's meet, which runs from March 1-5, 2016 at the Columbus Aquatic Center. Competition begins on the first with 3-meter diving prelims and finals.
Â
Shane Brinson is the lone diver on Shepard's squad in 2015-16 and has a very good chance of winning at least one individual national title at the meet. He's joined by seven male swimmers and 13 female swimmers.
Â
Lisa Tixier and
Christina Ali are the individual swimmers to watch for Biola as both come into the meet first in the nation in at least one individual event. Tixer won six All-American honors at nationals last year and is looking to add three individual championships to her career accolades with solid swims this year.
Â
The Biola women will look to improve upon last year's seventh-place finish with some strong relay showings. The men placed 10
th overall last season and are ranked 10
th heading into this year's competition.
Â
Indoor Track & Field has its championship meet in Johnson City, Tennessee at David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field. The meet begins with some multi-events and relays on March 3 and runs through March 5.
Â
It's Head Coach
Sean Henning's first season leading this track & field team to nationals and he's got high expectations on his contingent of 16 student-athletes.
Â
The women finished 30
th a season ago and the men placed 47
th. A strong showing by the guys in the distance medley relay would go a long way towards improving that finish this season.
Â
The women have two strong relay teams as well in the DMR and the 4x800m. Henning is bringing a large contingent of women to compete as 11 of the 16 student-athletes making the trip are on the women's side.
Â
With
Anika Gasner and
Kellian Hunt both not at 100 percent it will be time for some of the team's other women to step it up if the Eagles are looking to be competitive. Look for
Lyndee Dawson to have a huge impact,
Nicole Falkenstein to shine in pole  vault and
Elyse Harabedian to try for some points in the high jump.
