9-0 Victory Gives Biola A Winning Record

Biola improves to 8-7 on the year with a clean sweep of Colorado Christian.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Tennis moved over .500 for the first time this season with Friday's 9-0 win over Colorado Christian. Head Coach Brent Worthington's squad improved to 8-7 on the year with the decisive victory over the visiting Cougars.

"The boys kept our good tennis rolling today. It wasn't easy, they had to battle but everyone found a way to win and play well," said Worthington.

The Eagles began the day with a sweep of the three doubles matches. The tone was set by big wins at No. 1 and No. 2 from Lucas Lee, Luke Mountain, Philip Westwood and Joe Turnquist. The Eagles won 8-5 and 8-4 in the first two matches off the court.

The third match had a few more twists and turns as the Eagles barely escaped with a 7-3 tiebreak win in a 9-8 match. David Garcia and Michael Vartuli put in the hard work needed to guarantee Biola could pull of its second 9-0 win in the last three matches.

Vartuli also had to fight through in his singles match. He played at No. 6 singles and fought his way back after dropping the first set. He would win the match in a tiebreaker (4-6; 6-3 (12-10)) after Biola had already clinched the team victory.

"I'm particularly proud of Mike who battled to come back from a set down and play consistent tennis to finish off our day with a 9-0," said Worthington.

Westwood, Mountain, Turnquist, Garcia and Andrew Greenfield all won their matches in straight sets as Biola charged toward victory. Mountain was expecially dominant as he held his opponent without a win in a single game.

"This was a good week for us as we got on the winning side of our record for the first time all year. We have two important matches next week and are feeling confident to keep it rolling," said Worthington.

Biola's Saturday match at San Diego Christian was cancelled due to the Hawks forfeiture, so the Eagles are not back in action until they host the University of the Southwest at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
