Cougars Clip Eagles With Walk-Off Single

Biola battles back from a deficit twice, but a walk-off hit hands the team a 6-5 loss...

Sam Thorne went 2-for-3 and reached base four times in another solid outing. He's got a .478 OBP this season.
SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- The first time in the 2016 Biola Baseball season that the Eagles did not have the last at-bats turned out to be the time they needed them the most as CSU San Marcos stole a 6-5 walk off win over Biola on Tuesday afternoon.

Biola made the hour and a half drive to visit the Cougars for the Eagles' first road battle of the season. The team was looking to get back to its winning ways after a 4-0 loss to Antelope Valley on Saturday took some of the sweetness out of BU's 3-0 start.

Tiger Chase got the ball for Head Coach Jay Sullenger in this second midweek single game of the 2016 season. Chase came into the day with one perfect inning under his belt in his only other outing of the new season.

He would go three strong innings before everything started to pile up on him in the bottom half of the fourth. CSUSM began the inning with back-to-back singles to quickly erase the momentum of the freshman's back-to-back 1, 2, 3 innings.

Those two runners advanced on a balk and would later come across the plate on an error and sacrifice fly to give CSUSM a 2-0 advantage with two runners still on and two outs still to get in the fourth.

Chase would get one of those outs before getting pulled in favor of Brandon Valente. Valente made his first appearance of the 2016 season and got a two-strike count on his first batter before allowing a two-RBI single to take the game to 4-0 after four complete innings.

It would not be long before Biola's offense would answer that scoring flurry. In fact, four runs in the top of the fifth off CSUSM starter Manny Barragan would erase the deficit entirely.

Biola came into those runs off of a bunch of little things. Andres Rodriguez singled, Eugene Shin reached on an error, Sam Thorne walked, JD Meyer and Alec de Watteville each hit a run-scoring singles and an error by the Cougars' center fielder brought home two more runs to make it a whole new ballgame halfway through.

The bullpens hankered down a bit as the two teams were held pretty quiet for the next four innings. The only run to score between the sixth and eighth innings came when the Cougars' got a two-out single with runners on the corners off of Sean McCarrell in the sixth.

Biola would get all the way down to its final out of the ball game before it erased that 5-4 deficit. Some aggressive managing by Sullenger had CSUSM's catcher thinking he would need to try a pickoff at third base with two outs in the ninth inning. That throw would hit the bag and get far enough away to allow Andres Rodriguez to come around and score to tie the game.

Sullenger then brought in Daniel Jang to replace Buddy Brouwer, who pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, to start the bottom of the ninth. Jang walked the first batter, who next advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. The second out of the inning was made on a short fly out to left field, but a Taylor Ahearn single up the middle would bring the runner around to score and send CSU San Marcos home as walk off winners.

Biola falls to 3-2 after the loss and CSU San Marcos becomes 1-0 on the season. Sam Thorne had another great game in the leadoff spot by going 2-for-3 with a walk and hit-by-pitch in the losing effort.

The Eagles are back at home this weekend for a three-game non-conference set with Vanguard beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Friday.
