LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Temperatures were high and so was the pressure on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the Biola Tennis Center as Biola Men's Tennis hosted the men from Caltech for the first time in 2016.
Â
Caltech came into play with a 2-0 mark and a team that's shown vast improvements across the board since Head Coach
Brent Worthington's squad beat them 7-2 last March.
Â
"Today was a great team win," said Worthington. "We were down all day but continued to fight and found a way to win against a really good Caltech team."
Â
Biola was put in a hole right out of the gate after a tiebreaker win by Caltech at No. 2 doubles allowed the Beavers to lead 2-1 heading into singles play.
Â
Lucas Lee and
Luke Mountain played great tennis at No. 1 doubles to earn an 8-5 victory over Rushikesh Joshi and Morgan Lebby to salvage the one win for the Eagles in doubles. It was the second doubles win of the season for that pairing.
Â
After the Beavers won two of the first three singles matches to finish Worthington's team had its backs against the wall staring at a 2-4 deficit.
Â
Philip Westwood, Mountain and
David Garcia all managed to take down their opponents in straight-sets to clinch the come-from-behind 5-4 win and improve to 3-4 overall on the season.
Â
Garcia's 6-4; 6-2 victory over Andre Liu was the deciding match at No. 6 singles. With the win Garcia pulls to an even 3-3 in singles this season.
Â
Biola's other singles win came courtesy
Lucas Lee in the No. 1 spot. Lee cruised to a 6-2; 6-1 win and improved his team-leading winning streak to five straight singles wins.
Â
The Eagles compete again on Tuesday March 1 as they host Hope International in a return to Golden State Athletic Conference play at 2:00 p.m.
