Eagles Win No. 917 For Holmquist

Biola ensured that it would have a chance to play for the GSAC Championship with tonight's win against Menlo.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- On a night that was all about celebrating the founding of our fantastic university and our fantastic basketball coach, Biola Men's Basketball followed suit with a fantastic effort in a 72-62 victory over Menlo College.

The Eagles hosted the Oaks in a late-afternoon game that was the preamble to a celebration of Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist's 900th career win, which he notched in a W over Bethesda earlier this season.

Biola earned its 13th Golden State Athletic Conference victory of the season and secured a season sweep of the Oaks by combining strong shooting with tremendous rebounding and throwing a little bit of good defense in during the first half.

Coach Holmquist's team held the Oaks to just 26 first-half points while using an offense that was strong in transition and relied on excellent ball movement to pile on 34 points and take a solid lead into halftime.

The Eagles would extend the lead to up to 20 with just over five minutes to play by scoring 27 of the first 42 points of the second half. The tandem of Jeff Gonzalez and Caelan Tiongson keyed that strong stretch of scoring.

After finding it difficult to get the ball in the bucket in the first half, Gonzalez went 4-of-4 for eight points in the second half while bringing down six of his eight rebounds.

Tiongson was on fire from start-to-finish in the win tonight. He ended the game 9-of-11 with a team-high 21 points and added 10 rebounds to get to his first double-double.

Over his previous nine games he's managed to raise his season points-per-game average by nearly three whole points. Coincidentally, as he's heated up the Eagles have also been on fire. Biola is 8-1 in those nine games.

Dakari Archer, Terrell Funches and Trevor Treinen would join Tiongson with double-digit scoring efforts. Treinen got an impressive 13 points in just 23 minutes by shooting perfect from the free-throw line and draining three three-point shots.

Biola outlasted a late Menlo run, which saw the Oaks outscore BU 19-9 over the final five minutes, and ended up walking away with a win and a shiny, new 26-3 overall record. It was win No. 917 for Dr. Dave Holmquist and sets Biola up well for next week's senior night matchup with No. 7 Hope International.

The Eagles are currently one-half of a game ahead of the Royals in the GSAC standings. HIU has two games left in the regular season and Biola has just the one.
