Tough Luck Traps Eagles Under Cougars' Control

Biola allowed a two-run rally to result in four runs for CSUSM, which dramatically altered the makeup of this game.

Jerron Largusa reached base twice and crossed the plate once in a solid offensive day.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was another day of disappointment for Biola Baseball as the team showed flashes of its promising talent, but failed to put together nine strong innings in its sixth loss in a row.

Allowing CSU San Marcos to score nine straight runs to begin the game became an insurmountable obstacle as Biola lost to the Cougars for the second time this season; last time by way of walk-off and this time by an 11-6 margin.

Sean Rothfuss got the rock for his first midweek start of the 2016 season. He showed flashes of great stuff, but a two-out rally in the top of the fourth inning is ultimately what did in the senior in a seven-run, six-hit, four inning outing.

Rothfuss spotted the Cougars three runs in the top of the first, but he settled in very nicely over the next two innings by getting four strikeouts and holding CSUSM without a hit while showing glimpses of what he could offer as the season rolls along.

He had a stretch of eight straight batters retired (five by way of strikeouts) as he recorded the second out of the fourth inning. However, a hit batter extended the frame and from there the Cougars added another four runs to their growing lead.

That got the total to 7-0, which was already good enough to beat the six runs that the Eagles would eventually put on the board.

Those six runs came by way of two separate three-run innings in the fifth and sixth. The Eagles got to Cameron Mackenzie and Mark Vela, who were pitchers two and three in San Marcos' "bullpen rotation" during this game.

Eugene Shin was a catalyst for the Eagles' offense on Tuesday. He led off the sixth inning with a double and came around to score on an Anj Bourgeois RBI groundout. He was 2-for-2 on the day after pinch-hitting for Jeremy Barth in the middle of the game.

Aaron Chavez and Jerron Largusa also made some noise for Head Coach Jay Sullenger out of the seven and eight slot in the batting order. Both men ended with two hits and they combined to cross the plate three times in the game.

While that offense near the bottom of the order is a great sign of improvement moving forward it did not due much to help the Eagles' case in this one as CSUSM tacked on two more runs in the eighth to blow open what was just a three-run game and make it the 11-6 final.

Biola falls to 3-6 with its sixth-straight losing effort. The Cougars improve to 4-1 on the new year. Rothfuss drops to 0-2 with the loss, while Emilio Esquibel moves to 1-0 for CSUSM.

The Eagles hit the road this weekend as they begin Golden State Athletic Conference play with a three-game set at Menlo that begins this Friday.
