Defense Slams The Door Again In Big Win Over Hawks

Biola posts fourth consecutive shutout and scores three second half goals for another GSAC win.

Hali Oakes scores her first goal of the season in a 4-0 win over San Diego Christian
Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. --- Allowing opponents to score goals leaves such a sour taste for the Eagles that they have decided to do without that feeling for four matches in a row now. After blocking the San Diego Christian Hawks from taking a shot at any point during the second half, the Eagles rolled with three second-half goals to their fourth consecutive shutout on Saturday, a 4-0 victory.

"It was a tough stretch of matches for us since we've been the only team in the conference without a bye to this point," said Head Coach Erin Brunelle. "So an effort the ladies put into getting another shutout is huge as we build momentum going through the conference schedule and as we head into time off from matches."

The action in the first 10 minutes of the match seemed to forecast a bevy of saves for goalkeeper Christina Rodriguez, as the Hawks sent shots on goal in the first and ninth minutes. However, the momentum of a match turned on a dime once the Biola defense got in its rhythm. The Eagles only permitted five more shots, all coming over the next 19 minutes of play, and not a single try more for the home team the rest of the match.

In contrast, Biola's offense only picked up the pace as the match developed, taking 13 of its 20 shots in the second half and providing the match's first goal just two minutes before halftime. As both sides rushed toward the break with a flurry of activity, the Eagles tried to force one more dangerous cross into the San Diego Christian penalty area off the foot of Bri Mikalson.

The junior defender swung the ball from her right back position all the way to the left side of the box where Hali Oakes was waiting to find the net after a brief controlling touch. The freshman's goal was the first of her collegiate career and placed the momentum squarely into the Eagles' hands headed into the second half.

"It's great for Hali to get her first collegiate goal since she's been working hard to adjust to a starting role in our formation," said Brunelle. "By the time we reached the second half, we were settling the ball more and playing our style of game instead of letting the match stay a physical battle."

After all of her hard work, Taylor Venegas broke through with a goal after being held off the scorecard the previous four matches. Ironically enough, Venegas put the Eagles up 2-0 on a ball she found in a scramble just seconds after fellow captain Jessie Burns, hit the post with a shot of her own. Venegas narrowly missed a goal in Biola's last match at Westmont when one of her shots during overtime hit the crossbar and deflected back into play.

The Eagles would pour on two more goals for good measure in the final 30 minutes of the match. Samantha Verduzco scored her first goal in five matches just six minutes after Venegas' score to put the Eagles up 3-0.

Margaret Guadarrama put the finishing touch on the match with her second goal of the year in the 83rd minute. When Oakes' attempt for a second goal clanged off the post, Ashley Ramirez cleaned up the loose ball and found an open Guadarrama in the box with her team-leading seventh assist of the season.

With their second road win in Golden State Athletic Conference play, the Eagles remain in sole possession of first place in conference at 11-0-1 (5-0-1 GSAC). The Hawks are now in sixth place at 6-6-1 (1-3-1 GSAC). Biola is one of five remaining undefeated sides in the NAIA.

The Eagles will have over a week away from matches before playing Hope International in Fullerton on Wednesday Oct. 19 at noon.
