Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. --- Thursday afternoon proved a cycle that's been noticeable with this 2016 Biola Men's Soccer conference season: Even when everything seems to be going right for this team and they're in line for a positive result, some little things happens that spoils the day.
Â
The spoiler on this day was a 12-second stretch in the middle of the first half where a pair of defensive breakdowns allowed the Menlo Oaks to score twice and turn a 1-0 lead to a 2-1 deficit. The Eagles would eventually find an equalizer to force overtime, but a goal just over a minute into the extra period lifted Menlo to the 3-2 win.
Â
If not for that second goal in the 12-second stretch the Eagles could've been well on their way to a 2-1 win and keeping their name near the top of the table in a very tight GSAC race. Instead, the negative result made it so that the rain clouds were not the only thing that was gloomy up in Atherton this afternoon.
Â
"Our defense, which has been so solid all season, struggled at crucial moment today that ended up costing us," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "Poor tracking of the attacking runners was our demise today."
Â
That poor tracking was never more evident than in the 92
nd minute as Menlo's David Beary was allowed to get all alone on the end of one of his teammate's headers into the box and finished a one-time shot past keeper
Igor Puglia.
Â
The three-goal result is actually shocking for this Biola defense. The Eagles' back line and keeper are the class of the Golden State Athletic and head and shoulders above the rest of the team, but today was just not their day. Biola had allowed only five goals all season (14 matches) until today's three goals against.
Â
As a bit of a role reversal the Eagles' offense looked very, very dangerous again today. Biola took 17 shots to Menlo's eight and forced the Oaks' keeper Alex Coates-McDowall to make six saves. Coates-McDowall was in his first game back from injury and made a major difference in this one.
Â
He was put squarely under the microscope from the 60
th minute on as his team was playing with 10 men after a player got tossed from the match. He did well to deal with all of Biola's efforts after the red card, and there were a lot of them. The Eagles took nine shots after going a man up. Menlo had zero shots (in regulation) from that point on.
Â
Four of the Eagles' nine shots required action by Coates-McDowall as they went on target. The Oaks' keeper was successful on all but one of them. That one mistake came on the Biola's equalizer as
Leonardo Contreras scored on one of the Eagles' two second-half corner kicks. His goal was assisted by
Sammy McKay, who also assisted
Jarrett Pugh's goal earlier in the game.
Â
"Our offense has really picked up," said Elkins. "We created more high quality chances today than any other game this season and Sammy continues to contribute offensively."
Â
Biola drops to 10-5 (5-4 GSAC) following the disappointing loss. The team finishes its regular season on Saturday afternoon at William Jessup (8-7-1, 3-5-1 GSAC).
Â
The GSAC Tournament seeding will be decided after what is sure to be a wild Saturday. Each of the top-6 positions in the conference are up for grabs on that Saturday as just two points separate third place from sixth place.
Â
The Eagles can finish as high as third and as low as sixth depending on their result. A third or fourth place conference finish would allow BU to host a GSAC Tournament Opening Round match on Nov. 5.
