AMANDA OTTO'S WINNING CORNER KICK

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was not a perfect day to play more than 90 minutes of soccer, but it came to a perfect ending when an Amanda Otto corner kick bent into the back of the net to give No. 22 Biola a 1-0 golden goal victory over CSU San Marcos on Saturday night.

It was a balmy 83 degrees at game time at Al Barbour Field, but that temperature was easily reaching into the mid-90s with the effect of the turf field. A back-and-forth defensive struggle was the most difficult type of game to play in those conditions, but it ultimately played to the Eagles' advantage with a bunch of tired bodies in the box during the winning corner kick.

"It's awesome to get this win," said Otto. "I'm so proud of the girls. This is the best we've played against San Marcos during my whole four years here. We deserved nothing less than the win."

The two sides entered play with undefeated records and had a deadlocked 2-2-2 series record dating back the past five seasons.  Every time they meet the stakes are higher as both sides are battling for that year's bragging rights.

The back line of the Eagles did well to snuff out any offensive run the Cougars could pose throughout the match, holding CSUSM to just eight shots through the 99 minutes of play, including zero in the overtime period.

Biola's offense had steady opportunities on goal, but no real exciting chances in a game that was played primarily in the midfield throughout regulation. It was not until Alexis Lee subbed in at the end of the first half that some of Biola's runs began to look more promising.

She had one particular opportunity in the 44th minute that seemed as if it would break open the scoreless game, but a save by a Cougars' defender snuffed it out.

Lee again got subbed in late in the second half, and Biola's offense again seemed to switch up a gear. In the final 10 minutes of regulation the Eagles had three goes at goal, while CSUSM had nothing going but four fouls.

Then, in the 99th minute the Eagles' senior captain bent one just inside the far post to send all the fans in red home happy. It was her first goal of the season and was just what Biola needed to salvage its undefeated record in the sudden-death overtime scenario. It's Biola's first overtime victory of the season in its second attempt.

The No. 22 Eagles improve to 3-0-1 with the win and drop CSU San Marcos to 0-1-1. After playing three of its first four games in the friendly confines of Al Barbour Field Biola hits the road for four straight until coming home for a match with San Diego Christian on Sept. 26.
