HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was must-see TV at Al Barbour Field on Wednesday night as every single moment of action was absolutely scintillating between Biola and No. 3 Marymount. In the end the Eagles flew high above the Mariners in a 2-0 victory.
Â
Both goals came off the boot of senior captain
Joey O'Keefe, and both tallies came in the first half of this bitterly contested match.
Â
Marymount kept the intensity up for all 90 minutes, despite trailing by two goals for 55 of those minutes. There were no free balls to be had on either side as the midfield wrenched back-and-forth and back-and-forth all night long.
Â
"When you are playing against a team that plays at a high level of intensity for the majority of the game, no matter the score, they thrive off the 50-50 challenges and balls in the air. It makes them a competitive team," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins.
That competitiveness got a bit over the line on several occasions throughout the evening as Marymount accumulated three yellow cards and a red card and the Eagles brought in two yellows of their own.
Â
The red card came in the 69
th minute as a swinging forearm of Niklas Kratzer caught a Biola player straight in the throat over one of those 50-50 balls in the midfield.
Â
Biola played a man up through the final 20 minutes of the match and made the most of it by winning back possession and forcing the ball forward to run down the clock with the ball out of their opponent's attacking third.
Â
When the Mariners did have a few chances they were either stopped short by Biola's aggressive back line or pulled down by keeper, and birthday boy,
JT Addington.
Â
Addington had to face five corner kicks from the Mariners and gave them no room around his goal on any of them. He plucked the ball out of the air on corners and crosses left and right in a remarkable display of decision making.
Â
"Sometimes games when you don't face a lot of shots are the games that are more difficult for a keeper to perform well in," said Elkins. "Almost everything he dealt with was on services in the box, direct play in dangerous areas and corners. He had to make a lot of decisions on when to come and when not to come, and I think he was spot on."
Â
Addington held down the Mariners offense to post his second clean sheet of the 2015 season and 16
th of his career.
Â
O'Keefe was the story on the offensive side of the pitch as he netted his third and fourth scores of the new season. He got his chances because of the persistence and clean passing of the Eagles' offense in the dangerous areas.
Â
His first score came just nine minutes in as O'Keefe one-timed it past the keeper from point-blank range off a quick and crisp service from
Devin Leon on the far post.
Â
The second goal was in the 36
th minute as O'Keefe received a ball that ricocheted off the keeper following a
John Hanscom attempt and quickly redirected it to the back of the net to build the convincing lead. Hanscom got on the score sheet with his first point of the season for the assist.
Â
"In the dangerous areas of the field he [Hanscom] was sharp," said Elkins. "It was great to see John contribute, because I thought he's played well in our earlier games, but he hadn't got on the stat sheet. It was good to see from our senior."
Â
The win keeps Biola undefeated at 3-0 and drops the No. 3 Mariners to 0-2. They've got four times more red cards (4) than goals (1) this season. Biola is back in action again this Saturday with a home match against Whittier College at 7:00 p.m.
