The Stampede Is Stopped

Biola shuts down No. 25 The Master's College in three sets on Saturday night.

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It seems as if the five-set match against No. 16 Westmont last time out is just a blip on the radar for No. 1 Biola Volleyball, which got its ninth sweep in its last 10 matches with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-17) win over No. 25 The Master's College on Saturday night.

"I thought working through the first game was really important," said Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. "I thought they came out just throwing the kitchen sink. They were serving the ball all over the place and had us completely off-kilter."

The first set was the marquee game of the night as the two teams battled to the bitter end when ultimately Biola turned a TMC set point into a few points of its own and ultimately a set victory.

The frame had two turning points, and both came after perfectly called timeouts by Seltzer and his staff.

The first moment came after TMC won seven of 10 points to build its first-set lead to 9-4 and begin the process of quieting down what had been a raucous Chase Gymnasium.

Following the timeout a kill from Lauren Hoenecke got the Eagles to sideout and began a streak of five consecutive points that helped the home team tie the set at nine and pull right back into it.

From that point forward neither team had a lead larger than two points for the rest of the set. The Master's College got back-to-back kills cashing in beautiful sets from Aubrey Bekendam to take the game to a 24-23 score and get the first set point.

A service error allowed the Eagles to defend that set point and then they got one of their own following a huge kill by Britta Blaser. Alyssa Mason got her fourth kill of the first set to secure the 26-24 victory after Biola won the final three points.

Mason would go on to have eight kills and a block and hit .500 in her first match since Sept. 5.

Biol would have its best set of the match in the middle game when the Eagles wrapped up 14 kills and hit a match-best .367. Their defense also stepped up in a big way in that frame, getting three of its eight blocks in the frame.

Both teams were effective around the net with a combined 16 blocks, but both teams also had their fair share of troubles avoiding the net with a combined seven blocking errors.

"I think they're a whole different team with Aubrey, they're stud outside. I think it's a whole different game if they could've had her in there tonight," said Seltzer.

After falling behind 10-6 in the clinching set Biola rattled off seven of the next nine points to take back the lead at 13-12. But that was not even the most impressive streak of that set as just four points later the Eagles began a stretch of 10 points straight that put the game out of reach for the weary Mustangs.

Hoenecke had a fantastic game and landed 12 targeted attacks to lead the Eagles with 12 kills. She hit .400 and was in on half of Biola's blocks, including one solo block.

Blaser was the other one that was huge in the Eagles' blocking game. She too had a hand in four of the eight blocks.

The Eagles improve to 14-0 (6-0 GSAC) while The Master's College falls to 11-7 (4-2 GSAC) in 2015. Biola goes on the road for a Tuesday night conference match at San Diego Christian before returning home to the friendly confines of Chase Gym for a Wednesday night match with Providence Christian.
