Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a tale of two halves Saturday night at Al Barbour Field, as No. 14 Biola's incredible undefeated start to the season continued. A back-and-forth first half stalemate gave way to a barrage of offense in the second, as the Eagles ran away with a resounding 4-0 victory justifying that national ranking.
Whatever it was Head Coach
Erin Brunelle told her girls at half time certainly worked, as
McKenna Marmelstein got the second-half scoring party underway just two minutes after the break, bending a delightful free-kick around the wall from 20 yards out.
It was Marmelstein's second goal of the season and continues her hot statistical streak. She now boasts a two-goal, three-assist résumé that doesn't look to be slowing down soon.
Jessie Burns then added a second just seven minutes later, as her shot from the edge of the area took a deflection, to wrong-foot Katherine Koury who was already moving to her right.
Samantha Verduzco created the opportunity, whipping the ball in from the right flank for her first assist of the season. Burns took her goal-tally to three, good for third-most on the team.
Things went from good to great for Biola in the 62
nd minute when
Brittney Sayre unleashed a rocket that no keeper in the world could save. It was her first goal of the season and validates so much of the tireless work she puts in every game.
Taylor Venegas then capped off the impressive second-half performance with a solo goal that began with a midfield takeaway, included her dribbling past three defenders, and culminated with a composed and wonderfully taken finish.
The score line looks harsh for a SDC side that created opportunities and were very compact in defense though. Their first half performance was encouraging and perhaps foreshadows a more optimistic future in GSAC, having already played #7 ranked Westmont and #14 ranked Eagles in their opening two games. Vivian Oray and Katherine Day were dangerous going forward and Alejandra Gonzalez's footwork was a joy to behold, as she skilfully linked the Hawks' midfield and forward line.
Rachel Giles started her first game at left back in the absence of senior-captain
Amanda Otto, who's consistency and ability to create extra offense from the flanks has been a huge reason Biola finds itself undefeated after nine games. Giles was composed and her presence complemented
Madyson Brown, Catherine Newberry and
Kayla White who have been a model of consistency and the backbone of this team too.
Looking ahead, Brunelle prepares for a clash of the nationally ranked titans, as No. 7 Westmont come to town Wednesday night. This will be the second top-10 opponent of the season for Biola who played to a 2-2 draw with No. 2 Northwestern Ohio in August.
