Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was exactly what the Eagles needed on a typically hot September afternoon at Al Barbour Field. Biola bounced back from a tough two-game road trip, scoring early and never relinquishing their lead in a 2-0 win over San Diego Christian.
Â
The early lead came in just the 10
th minute when
John Hanscom's ball across the box found Cristhian Aparicio at the back-post, who riffled a volley back across SDC's keeper Ryan Huerta for his first goal of the season. The first 10 minutes had been positive for the Eagles, and the goal was the confidence boost their bright start deserved.
Â
The Eagles continued to push forward throughout the half, while
Sammy McKay and
Riley Waldeck marshalled a defiant backline who had their hands full with Pedro Henrique, Borja Suarez and a Hawks offensive unit that had already scored 38 goals in nine games before being shutout tonight.
Â
Biola's positivity was rewarded in the 30th minute when senior-captain
Joey O'Keefe scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season. This time the opportunity came from the right side, as
Keaton Kerr found O'Keefe on the top of the box with time to turn. O'Keefe took one touch and then breathtakingly curled the ball into the top-left corner for a 2-0 lead.
Â
JT Addington recorded his fourth shutout of the season, though not without a late heart-flutter. With two minutes to play Suarez hit a bouncing ball from just inside the edge of the box that rattled the upright as the best opportunity of the game for the Hawks.
Â
Addington didn't have too much work to do tonight, although when he was called upon he came up strong, making one particularly impressive save while the game was still only 1-0. Francisco Ramirez had the opportunity after a well-worked play on the edge of the box, but Addington stayed upright and made the save to deny the Hawks' forward. O'Keefe scored just three minutes after the save to double the lead.
For the Eagles, it was Hanscom who was the danger man throughout. His quick footwork was on full display, carefully nutmegging a couple of helpless Hawks, while his assist could've been complemented by one or two more if not for some last-ditch defending.
Â
Stephen Tanquary was bright too, starting at home for the first time this year, and had a wonderful second-half opportunity ricochet off the apex of the goal to a chorus of oohs and aahs in the bleachers.
Elkins' tactics were sharp and clean, aided by the early goal from Aparicio. The Eagles were aggressive early and then defended well and kept possession when it was needed to see off any chance of a second-half Hawk comeback.
Â
Marshall Deogracia and
Kousei Mattox were impressive again, while
Jarrett Pugh and
Clayton Mohler's work rate flew under the radar, but did not go entirely unnoticed.
Devin Leon came off the bench with a flurry of energy and his deft footwork and agility led to three Hawk yellow cards - the only bookings of the game.
The Eagles will take their win into a run of three more home games starting with Westmont on Tuesday night.Â
