Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. --- Biola and Menlo began the 2015 Golden State Athletic Conference season with a defensive battle that was highlighted by some strong goalkeeping in a 0-0 draw.
Â
Biola played a majority of the first half in its own defensive third. This, despite the apparent lack of offensive statistics in the play-by-play, gave Menlo the edge in momentum for much of the half and heading into halftime.
Â
The Oaks only had three shots and one shot-on-goal in the first half, but even so they were putting nonstop pressure on the Eagles' back line and on
JT Addington throughout that scoreless period of play.
Â
When Biola did have the ball in its own offensive third it did its best to make the most chances it could at goal. The Eagles had three chances off corner kicks that were awarded and they had one more shot go on target in the half.
Â
One of Biola's two best chances of the half came when
Joey O'Keefe headed a ball toward the goal off one of those corner kick opportunities. The header went just a few inches outside of the goalpost and helped the Oaks escape with a game that was still tied.
Â
The other opportunity came when Biola forced the ball into the attacking zone with just under five minutes to play and a
Daniel Martinez look got snuffed out just before he could make solid contact.
Â
A late run from
John Hanscom got turned away in the final seconds of the half as the teams took a lot to work on into the locker rooms at the break.
Â
The second half saw Biola continually force the ball into their own offensive third as the Eagles' dangerous group of forwards and attacking midfielders began to create more chances later in the game.
Â
The physicality of the game increased as the scoreless game rolled along as the two teams combined for nearly 40 fouls in regulation and each team got a card.
Â
At the end of regulation both goalkeepers maintained their clean sheets as Addington held off Menlo's three shots-on-goal and Alex Coates-McDowall someow fended off the Eagles' seven attempts on target.
Â
And so for the second time in a week Biola Soccer had both teams take their games into overtime in order to find a winner. This overtime game finished up a bit differently from last week as the Eagles lost at UC Merced a week ago.
Â
Menlo put a ton of pressure on the Biola defense in the overtime periods nearly doubling their chances from regulation, but in the end neither team could find paydirt and the 0-0 draw happened.
Â
Biola moves to 4-3-1 (0-0-1 GSAC) and Menlo becomes 6-1-1 (0-0-1 GSAC) on the season. The Eagles are back at home this Saturday night for their next game against San Diego Christian.
