Box Score CLAREMONT, Calif. --- It did not seem as if we were in for much offense as No. 22 Biola and Pomona-Pitzer played a quiet and scoreless first half of soccer on Saturday, but one
Taylor Venegas was done lighting up the scoreboard there was a bit of a different feel.
The junior forward scored her first goal of the season, followed by her second and third, in a stunning hat trick performance that helped the Eagles to a 3-1 early morning victory.
Venegas entered the game tied for the team-lead with eight shots this season, but none of them had found the back of the net in what's been a frustrating start for the Eagles' top scorer from 2014. Her hat trick was the first for Biola Women's Soccer since Victoria Dalla Zanna netted three back on Oct. 29, 2013 against Arizona Christian.
The junior's season-long frustration began to fade just a minute and a half into the second half when she went one-on-one against the Sagehens' second half keeper, Annie Wedel, and found the twine from the corner of the box.
The high from that tally didn't last too long as Pomona-Pitzer got on the board less than five minutes later with a rebound goal following one of
Amanda Johnson's six saves.
Normally you'd expect both teams to settle down a bit after two quick scores, but the Eagles kept on pushing in that fast-paced opening 10 minutes of the second half. The third goal within that 10 minutes came in the 54
th minute as the Eagles turned a steal into some more offense.
The stolen ball came into the possession of
Jessie Burns, who in turn pushed it on to Venegas who was ready to finish the 2-on-1 opportunity.
The Eagles held onto that 2-1 lead until the very end of the game when they got a last-minute corner kick opportunity.
Michaila Martin took the corner, which was first taken in by
McKenna Marmelstein before Venegas ultimately booted it home. This was the insurance that sealed the Eagles' 3-1 victory and instantly made Venegas the Eagles' second-leading scorer this season.
With the win Biola improves to 4-0-1. The loss drops the Sagehens to 2-2 on the year. Biola continues its road trip with a tough one on Wednesday. It's got a 1:00 p.m. match at UC Merced (5-0-1).
