Falkenstein Gets Four-Peat, Relay Breaks Record

Nicole Falkenstein got her fourth All-American honor and the 4x800m relay broke the school mark.

GULF SHORES, Ala. --- One school record fell and two events saw All-American honors bestowed on Biola student-athletes on a successful day two at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The skies cleared and no lightning bothered the festivities during Friday's competition at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium and Gulf Shores Sports Complex. Nicole Falkenstein and the Eagles' 4x800m relay team both turned the good weather into All-American performances, with the relay breaking a school record in the process.

Falkenstein was the first one on the track and the last one off it for Biola today, beginning the pole vault competition at 2:00 p.m. PT and not concluding it until around 6:00 p.m. She cleared five heights en route to a third-place finish at 3.70m that secured her fourth NAIA All-American honor.

The 200m was the only individual track event to feature an Eagle on Friday, as Kate Smiley placed 14th in the prelims with her time of :24.80. She was four-tenths of a second out of a qualifying time for the finals and just four-hundredths shy of breaking the school record.

The 4x800m has long been Biola's premier relay, and it proved why yet again on Friday, finishing in All-American range with a seventh-place mark. The team of Kathleen Bell, Anika Gasner, Kellian Hunt and Alisa Murray broke the school record set at last year's national meet with their time of 9:03.52.

The 2015 season will wrap up with day three of this meet on Saturday. Still to compete for the Eagles is Brandon Berz in the 3,000m steeplechase (12:20 p.m. PT), Kellian Hunt in the 5,000m (3:30 p.m. PT) and Kevin Horchler in the 5,000m (3:55 p.m. PT).
