Short, Sweet And Stormy

Half of the day's events had to be postponed, but the Eagles got good showings in the two that did get in.

GULF SHORES, Ala. --- For the first time in 11 years the NAIA is going to be operating under an augmented schedule at the Outdoor Track & Field National Championships as severe weather forced postponement of the last half of the day one competition schedule.

Biola had one relay team and one individual complete preliminary competitions before the thunderstorms and lightning shut things down at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium and Gulf Shores Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon.

The day began with the women's 4x100m relay. Head Coach Bill Crumey tabbed three freshmen and a junior to run this relay, and the quartet of Emily Heisinger, Taylor Holcomb, Morgan Dworak and Kate Smiley placed 18th overall. The group finished six-tenths of a second outside of a top-10 finish with their :47.89. The 'A' squad from Wayland Baptist took home first place with a :44.91. The Eagles' :47.89 broke the previous school outdoor record for the 4x100m relay. The previous mark of :48.87 was set in 2011.

Anika Gasner was the only individual athlete to compete and complete on day one. Gasner finished one spot outside of a finals qualifying time with her 13th-place finish in the 1,500m. She finished with a 4:38.05 to finish seven-tenths of a second behind a student-athlete from Arizona Christian that claimed the last qualifying spot.

Nicole Falkenstein cleared the opening height of 3.40m to begin the women's pole vault competition, but before she could get to the second attempts the weather shut everything down for the day.

Biola's women's 4x800m relay and Kate Smiley's 200m were also originally scheduled to compete on Thursday, but the events were pushed back due to the weather.

Friday's competition will include Falkenstein's pole vault (2:00 p.m. PT), Smiley's 200m prelim (3:15 p.m. PT) and the women's 4x800m relay (4:00 p.m. PT). Live results are available at http://cfpitiming.com/liveresults/2015_Outdoor/NAIA_Champs_2015/
