Everyone Loves A Happy Ending

Biola sweeps William Jessup in the Saturday doubleheader to end 2015 on a high note.

Micah Beyer showed why the future of Biola Baseball is bright with a phenomenal outing in game one.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SACRAMENTO, Calif. --- It's been up. It's been down. Whatever it's been, the 2015 Biola Baseball season ended on a very high note on Saturday as the Eagles claimed two victories over William Jessup powered by tremendous pitching performances by two guys who will be vital contributors to the staff over the coming years.

Biola got a 5-1 win in support of Micah Beyer in game one and then backed Jimmy Gallarda with a 4-1 win in the nightcap to end the season 22-31 (16-26 GSAC).

The Eagles put all memory of yesterday afternoon's tough-luck loss behind them and came out determined to get victory in these games, scoring in the top of the first inning in each outing and never trailing.

The offense was nice, but it was all about the pitching and defense in this doubleheader. Beyer earned his fifth victory of the year in the opener, going six innings of one-run ball and allowing just three hits to the Warriors while striking out seven.

Gallarda was equally as impressive in game two, going six one-run innings with just four hits surrendered. He pitched to contact, getting zero strikeouts, but relying on his defense to get the work done. They did just that, recording only one error in each game.

Biola scored runs in four different innings in the opener, using small ball to get the job done. The first run of the game came home on a steal of second base, when Paul Slater saw his opportunity to come home on the throw to second. An Andy Smith sacrifice fly made it 2-0 before Jessup even got to grab the bats.

The Warriors scored one run on a throwing error in the bottom half of the first before getting shut out the rest of the way.

Julian Jarrard was a huge part of the Eagles' other three runs in the game. His walk with the bases loaded scored a run in the second, and he added an RBI single that brought home Tanner Swire in the fourth. Finally, he came around to score on a Jeremy Barth single in the ninth inning.

Buddy Brouwer worked three innings in relief of Beyer, earning his first save of the season and surrendering zero hits to WJU in locking down the first victory of the day.

Andy Smith's second sacrifice fly of the afternoon brought home the first run of the game in the second contest. He brought home Paul Slater, who reached in his first at-bat in each game this afternoon.

Rob Groeschell, who notched his 100th hit as an Eagle in game two, came around to score on a Sean McCarrell double in the fourth inning for Biola's second run. Jarrard and Barth both hit RBI doubles in the fifth to bring the Eagles up to their total of four runs.

An RBI single in the sixth was the only scoring for WJU, whose bats were quiet all day long.

The most entertaining at-bat of the afternoon came in the seventh inning of the second game as Garrett Picha had a chance to face Manuel Velasquez pinch-hitting for Jarrard. Picha ripped a single into left field and stayed in the game to run, ultimately getting stranded at second.

The two wins made for a sweet way to say goodbye to the Eagles' five seniors: Rob Groeschell, Garrett Picha, Paul Slater, Andy Smith and Tanner Swire.
