HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Senior Day was as sweet as could be for Biola Baseball as the team scored 23 total runs in a doubleheader sweep of San Diego Christian to end with a season-series split with the Hawks.

Biola claimed a 13-5 victory in the opener, the two teams' second-straight three-hour plus contest, before Biola's five seniors (and one new recruit) were honored between games. The offense just kept coming in the second game as the Eagles walked away with a 10-7 victory that included a Julian Jarrard grand slam.

The Eagles were ready to avenge yesterday's 17-8 loss from the get-go in the opening game. After Micah Beyer posted a scoreless top of the first Biola dropped six on the Hawks while batting around and then some against two Hawks pitchers.

Paul Slater and Tanner Swire, two of the team's five seniors, began the game with back-to-back hits before a Jarrard walk loaded the bases before a single out had been recorded. Andy Smith, another senior, walked and Jeremy Barth singled to score two runs for Biola and keep the bases loaded before a Jimmy Gallarda flyout got one down for the Hawks.

The offense just kept chugging along as Andres Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice putout at second base that allowed two more runs to score. Next up was Rob Groeschell, another senior, who blasted a double to left field that brought home Rodriguez. With that hit, every senior that would play on Saturday had either an RBI or run scored in the very first inning.

The final run of the inning came home on an error by the right fielder to make it 6-0.

The Hawks would get five runs back over the second and third innings, but 6-5 was as close as they would be able to get for the rest of the game as Beyer, Eric Diomartich and Jarrard would combine to shutout SDC over the remaining six innings.

The Eagles would not remain silent, getting two runs in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the eighth to complete the score line and secure Beyer's fourth win of the year (4-5).

Slater, Barth and Rodriguez combined for nine hits, five RBI and six runs scored as the leaders of the Eagles' offense through the first half of the doubleheader. Groeschell and Eugene Shin each had two hits to round out the five Eagles with multiple hits off a less-than-impressive arsenal of arms from San Diego Christian in a complete role reversal from Friday afternoon's game.

The second game saw Head Coach Jay Sullenger hand Gallarda the ball to start the game. He would go five complete innings of three-run ball to get his second win of the season as Biola led from the bottom of the first inning on.

The Eagles dropped a four-spot in each of the first two innings to answer SDC's three in the top of the first.

That answer came with emphasis as all four second-inning runs came on a monster of a grand slam by Jarrard. It was his 13th big fly of the season, tying him for fourth in the country.

His big bash came contrary to the small ball that got Biola all of its runs in the first inning, scoring off two singles and an RBI groundout.

Things got quiet through the middle innings as both sides were simply recording a bunch of quick groundouts until a double from Rodriguez brought home Smith to extend the lead to 9-3 in the fifth. Rodriguez was 6-for-14 with six runs and five RBI in the three games at Eagles Diamond this weekend.

Biola's final run came in its final at-bats in the bottom of the sixth of the shortened game. Andy Smith singled to bring home Swire to lock in the 10-run score line.

SDC managed two of their own in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but it was not enough to overcome the Eagles' efforts as Biola completed the win to take two-of-three in this weekend series.

Biola improves to 20-28 (14-25 GSAC) and San Diego Christian falls to 10-38 (9-30 GSAC) on the season. The Eagles are back at Eagles Diamond on Wednesday for their final home series of the year, going twice with CSU San Marcos.
