LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola hosted Christopher Newport University on Tuesday afternoon looking to snap a five-match losing streak. CNU had won four of its last five and was looking to keep its own streak alive.
Â
In the end it was the Captains who took the match, winning seven of the nine matches over the Eagles, who were outmatched across the board. CNU improved to 6-2 with the win and Biola fell to 3-6 overall.
Â
It continues to be a rough stretch of tennis for Biola, which has not won a match since it improved to 3-0 with a 5-4 win over Hope International on Feb. 10.
Â
The Eagles' lone wins in this one came in straight-set victories in singles by Phillip Westwood and
Luke Mountain.
Â
Westwood defeated Justin Cerny at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-3. Westwood improves to 4-5 in singles competition this season and drops Cerny to 5-3. Cerny entered play on Tuesday with at 3-0 record at the No. 3 position.
Â
Mountain became 3-6 on the year following his victory. He beat CNU's Chiraag Shetty in the No. 4 position. It was Mountain's first singles victory since Feb. 6. He started the season 2-0 in singles matches before losing six straight. His win over Chiraag brought the Captains' player to 2-5 on the year in dual matches.
Â
The Eagles have a good chance to break up the losing streak on Friday, traveling to CalTech to makeup a match that was rained out earlier this season. Play begins in Pasadena at 3:30 p.m.
