Eagles Get Back On Track, Beat Principia

Biola earned its first victory in a month with its 6-3 defeat of Principia College (Ill.).

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola claimed its first victory in exactly a month with a 6-3 score over Principia College (Ill.) on Tuesday. The Eagles' victory was powered by taking two-thirds of doubles and two-thirds of singles play.

"Their players made great calls and fought hard, while our players were gracious and played with intensity," said Head Coach Dee Henry. "Points were well-played. It was great to see this level of play. It was as pure of tennis as we get to see."

Henry referred to the victory as a "Big W" for exhibiting a great attitude and sportsmanship on the court, and a "Little W" for getting the match win.

Biola held the advantage throughout most of the match, except for when the Panthers' No. 1, Hanne Anderson, was on the court. Anderson won her singles match over Kathryn Ashford with a tiebreak win in set one and a 6-2 victory to clinch. She was also a part of the only double pairing to hand the Eagles a loss, combining with Kelly Adams for a 8-6 victory. Anderson improved to 5-3 in singles and 5-3 in doubles.

Brooke Sanford and Lauren Vogel had days similar to Anderson, winning in both singles and doubles for Biola. Sanford earned a 6-1; 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles and Vogel won 6-2; 6-2 at No. 6.

Then, both players experienced an 8-3 victory as parts of the Eagles' No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairings, both of which earned the decisive victories.

"Our doubles positioning and aggressive net play won a lot of points," said Henry. "In singles the players are making good choices about when to neutralize, when to attack and when to defend. They are becoming all-court players."

Biola improved to 2-8 after the victory and dropped the visiting Panthers to 2-6 overall. The Eagles next take to the court on March 17, hosting Sewanee at 2:00 p.m.
