Boom Goes The Dynamite

Biola hits two bombs to help in a come-from-behind 7-5 win over No. 18 Concordia.

Jimmy Gallarda hurled 3.0 innings of scoreless relief to cap Biola's comeback victory and get a save.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- After three games in the loss column in its last conference series, Biola Baseball sought to right the tide right away as it opened its three-game set with No. 18 Concordia on Friday.

Two homeruns went a long way towards helping that cause and enstilling some confidence in the Eagles, as the team fought back from down 5-0 through two and a half innings to a 7-5 victory.

"A Friday win is always a good win, but especially when it comes against the team that has been number one in our conference to this point in the season," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger.

This Friday win certainly did not start out with the makings of a Biola victory, as the visiting Eagles flexed their muscles beginning in the second inning after Biola's starter Garrett Picha cruised through the first.

Robert Shiroky led-off the top of the second inning with a deep bomb to left-center on the very first pitch from Biola's ace. Six more Concordia hits over the course of the next six outs equated to a CUI five-run lead headed into Biola's half of the third and had Picha on the ropes early.

He hung around to pitch through the sixth inning, just as a veteran pitcher should, and it is a good thing he did, as Biola's bats began to wake up as the hitters figured out Spencer Moran's arsenal of pitches.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the third, Andrew Frank and Paul Slater kept the inning alive for the Eagles with two singles to setup a three-run homerun by Andrew Smith that brought this one back to being a ballgame. It was Smith's second homerun of the season, tied for the team lead.

"The team stayed in it and competed," said Sullenger. "After they [CUI] put up a two-spot in the third we came back and answered with three. It is all a product of the fight we've been talking about and emphasizing."

That fight was evident in Biola's pitching throughout the final two-thirds of this one, as after allowing five runs and six hits through the first three innings, Picha and Jimmy Gallarda combined to allow no more runs and just one more hit through the final six frames.

While the pitching held steady it was up to the offense to continue the comeback, and the rest of that two-run deficit got erased real quick when Jeremy Barth stepped into the box with one out and one on in the sixth inning. The Eagles' big third-baseman muscled up on a 1-0 pitch and sent it flying over the right field wall to tie the game at five.

The offense did not stop there, staking claim on the lead during that very same inning, after a single from Frank plated Sean McCarrell, who had just slammed a two-out double to right-center field.

Gallarda took the mound at the top of the next inning and the rest was history. He hurled 3.0 shutout innings and struck out five in a very impressive relief performance. It earned him his first save of the season, while Picha improved to 1-1 with the win.

"We were in opposite spots, as we were 1-5 and they were 5-1 coming into this one, but we protect our home turf, and we did a much better job of executing some things we talked about," said Sullenger. "We saw a lot of guys just getting at it out there today. It was just a product of taking a better approach as a whole offensively."

Biola improves to 4-5 (2-5 GSAC) and Concordia dropped to 6-2 (5-2 GSAC). The two squads go head-to-head for two games at Eagles Diamond tomorrow, with the first pitch scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
