Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Monday's 55-43 victory over the University of Alberta was one of those games that elicits the response, "a win is a win."
 
A strong first-half defensive effort coupled with a consistent second-half scoring output helped Dr. Dave Holmquist's squad get to 14-1 on the season.
 
Neither team was as sharp as it could have been as both were coming off long breaks for the holidays and neither team shot above 37 percent in any half.
 
For much of the first 20 minutes it seemed as if the Eagles would do the unthinkable by holding Alberta under 10 points for the period. A hot stretch of three-point shooting right at the end of the frame helped the Golden Bears get to 15 points in what was still a very underwhelming performance from the visiting team.
 
Biola took a 28-15 lead into the break led in large part by two nearly flawless performances from Trevor Treinen and Caelan Tiongson. Both players came in off the bench to play some valuable minutes for Holmquist in the early going.
 
Treinen was 3-for-5 from the floor in the first half. All of his makes were from deep as he accounted for 11 of the Eagles' 28 first-half points. Tiongson was a perfect 2-for-2 and added two rebounds in a first half that was just a glimmer of what he would add to the game in the second period.
 
The game leveled a bit in the second frame as Alberta improved its shooting percentage by 18 percent and continued to control the game on the boards. The Golden Bears would outscore Biola by one point in the second half, but never had any real chance of making it any closer than it was.
 
Tiongson played a big role in the Eagles' second half scoring as he added six points of his own while also serving up two of the best assists we've seen all season. One of those assists came when he gathered a loose ball and found Treinen wide open in the lane for a big dunk.

Terrell Funches also made a noticeable impact over the final 20 minutes as he scored 11 of his 13 points in the second frame to tie with Treinen for the team lead in scoring in this one.
 
Biola got 29 bench points on a day when Holmquist utilized his role players much more than normal to make up for a cold shooting day from Dakari Archer. Archer still managed to contribute in other ways as he ended with a team-high seven rebounds, a handful of assists and a steal.
 
Brody Clarke was the only player on the opposite side that was able to do much of anything against this Biola defense. He shot 7-of-12 and ended up with 17 points in the loss.
 
The Eagles move to 14-1 and have one more non-conference matchup this Wednesday on the road at La Sierra. After that Biola moves into Golden State Athletic Conference play for the remaining 14 games on its schedule.
