LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola student-athletes claimed nearly half of the Golden State Athletic Conference weekly awards after some monumental performances between Oct. 12-18.
Alyssa Mason and
John Hanscom each earned their second GSAC Player of the Week honors, while
Becca Branch earned her first recognition of the season.
Â
Mason put up some insane numbers during Biola's 3-1 week split between a conference game and tournament competition against three top-25 teams. She averaged double-digit kills while hitting .526 and adding an exorbitant amount of blocks with some big performances in Iowa.
Â
She earned her second GSAC Attacker of the Week award of the season and third weekly conference honor of her three-year career with the Eagles.
Â
Branch is in just her second week of the season as she continues to get used to playing at the collegiate level after recovering from an early-season injury. She split time with
Ashton Arbuthnot in Iowa as the two set Biola's dangerous hitters for some solid attacking performances.
Â
The freshman compiled 105 assists in parts of four matches and averaged nearly seven assists-per-set. She also was vital to Biola's defensive effort with her 26 digs, averaging just over six per match. Her solid all-around play earned her the first GSAC Setter of the Week award of her career.
Â
Hanscom has been absolutely on fire for Biola's men's soccer team as it continues to win games in its conference schedule. He helped the Eagles to a 2-0 week and racked up two goals and an assist as Biola outscored its opponents 6-4 in two one-goal wins.
Â
The two goals pushed him to five goals over his last four matches and helped him to 12 points in seven conference matches. He leads all student-athletes with the most points in conference-only competition.
Â
His performance against Hope International on Saturday was extra sweet because he scored both goals in the 2-1 victory on his senior night. This is his second career GSAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week honor and comes one week after his first career honor.
Â
Student-athletes are nominated for weekly conference awards by the sports information director at their given institution. A committee of conference SIDs then vote for the weekly winners. Fall awards include men and women's soccer offensive and defensive player of the week and volleyball attacker, defender and setter of the week.
