Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- What a night for
John Hanscom. Not only is he joined by his five other senior brothers for their senior night, but he also scored both of Biola's goals in a 2-1 win over Hope International that was so, so sweet.
Â
It was a match that slipped completely out of control of the referee as the physicality escalated throughout the 90 minutes of intense Golden State Athletic Conference action.
Â
Seven yellow cards were doled out by the official, with five of those seven coming in the 54
th minute or later. Five Hope International players were cautioned and two Eagles got booked.
Â
Aside from the discipline there was actually some really good soccer being played at Al Barbour Field with the Eagles controlling the play for most of the time and being rewarded for their effort with a 10
th victory of the season.
Â
The first score of the night came exactly 25 minutes in as
Jarrett Pugh found Hanscom just outside the penalty area to the right side of the cage. He hit an absolute banger cross cage that finished in the upper left and gave the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Â
That goal was Hanscom's fourth of the season and fourth of the last three games, and he was nowhere near done yet.
Â
His go-ahead goal held as the only tally of the first half as an Eddie Arellano shot, that was really the Royals' only quality chance of the half, clanked off the crossbar in the final minute of the frame.
Â
Hope International came out of the half and looked to immediately knot that score line up at one. They had a handful of shots right away and ultimately saw one find the back of the net on a strange play that saw their forward win a ball from the Eagles' defense in the penalty area and just scoot it past
JT Addington.
Â
Biola's number of chances continued to rise as tensions continued to rise as the final half progressed. The Eagles had a two-minute span that saw them fire off four shots before one ultimately parked in the net behind the visiting keeper.
Â
It was the persistence of Hanscom that resulted in the go-ahead, and ultimately game-winning, tally. He trailed behind
Stephen Tanquary on a 3-on-2 run and was able to scoop up a deflection of a Tanquary shot and find the back of the net for goal number two on the night.
Â
After that focus was definitely lacking on the Hope International side that had just one shot over the remaining 32 minutes. In that same time they picked up six fouls and four yellows.
Â
The win comes as an emotional one for
Joey O'Keefe, Hanscom, Addington, Tanquary,
Cristhian Aparicio and
Marshall Deogracia as the group of six played their final regular season home game at Al Barbour Field.
Â
The Eagles improve to 10-3-1 (6-0-1 GSAC) with the victory and drop the Royals to 7-7 (2-4 GSAC) with the loss. Biola ends its conference season with three road matches in a row, beginning at Vanguard this Wednesday afternoon.
