Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. --- It was not easy by any means, but a powerful late performance by
Alyssa Mason and successful hitting across the board ultimately helps No. 4 Biola Volleyball to its second-straight win by way of a sweep (25-20, 25-22, 25-21).
The Eagles traveled to Fullerton to take on Hope International inside of the Darling Pavilion with the Royals having thoughts of upsetting the Eagles and continuing what's been a positive start to conference play for the team that sits a surprising fourth in the conference standings.
The Royals made a little noise in the second set, taking as large as a 13-6 lead before ultimately dropping the game later on, but overall was simply outmatched by the level of talent the Eagles had on the floor. Hope International getting three scores in the 20s was a positive sign for the Royals and a bit of a nerve-racking one for the Eagles who held HIU to as few as 10 points in a set the last time these two sides met this year.
As mentioned above Mason shined bright for Biola throughout the match tonight. She led all players with 11 kills and went without a single ball in the net, out of bounds or blocked in posting a hitting percentage of .647. Tonight marks her fourth time this season hitting over the .600 mark.
Mason played a role in the most pivotal moment of the match, getting one kill as Biola won nine of 11 points in the middle of the second set to pull back within one point of the Royals.
Primarily Hope International dragged itself down to let the Eagles back into that set as six of those nine points to Biola came off of some kind of Royals error (setting, receiving, blocking or attacking).
Biola's back row was again stellar helping Biola to a significant advantage over HIU in service aces. The Eagles allowed just three aces to Hope International to create a +4 advantage for BU on a night where serving was not even particularly a strong suit.
Alex Brehaut (8),
Tess Van Grouw (7) and
Becca Branch (6) led that effort with a bevy of digs.
Conley Kipp was again the difference-maker for HIU and really the only reason they kept the match close. She ended with 10 kills on a .500 clip while only two other players on the Hope International side were able to hit over .200 against a Biola front that raked in seven blocks.
Britta Blaser and
Joclyn Kirton each added eight kills to support Mason in the Biola attack. Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer had all three of his setters in rotation throughout the night to feed the attackers with Branch's 16 assists leading the way.
The win moves Biola to 17-1 (9-1 GSAC) and drops the Royals to 8-9 (5-4 GSAC). The most highly-anticipated portion of Biola's schedule comes up next as the team heads to Iowa on Friday and Saturday for matches with No. 3 Missouri Baptist, No. 25 Grand View and No. 14, and defending national champions, Park.
