Box Score SANTEE, Calif. --- For the second time in the last four games No. 11 Biola Women's Soccer got behind by two goals early on. This game had a much different finish from the last time as the Eagles got four second-half goals to defeat San Diego Christian 4-2.
Shayna Petersen-Burman got the Hawks off to the hot start with one goal off a free kick in the 25
th minute and another off a one-touch off a through ball in the 37
th minute.
The home team took that lead into halftime because Katherine Koury, SDC's goalkeeper, was able to stop all four chances the Eagles put her way in the first half.
The team's had equal opportunities to score throughout that half, and really throughout the entire game, but the keeping made the difference in each 45-minute segment.
While Koury remained in the game coming out of halftime Head Coach
Erin Brunelle entered
Amanda Johnson in the goal for the Eagles hoping to keep the Hawks off the board for the rest of the contest.
Her plan worked to perfection as Johnson came up with saves on both of SDC's second half shots-on-goal. Meanwhile, Biola's attackers found a way around Koury in a hurry coming out of halftime.
The Eagles got two pairs of goals in the second half to roar back and win the game, and each pair of goals came within less than two minutes of one another.
The relentless scoring was opened a junior forward
Taylor Venegas scored back-to-back to tie the game with tallies in the 49
th and 50
th minutes. Both goals were assisted as
Ashley Ramirez served up the first and
Brianna Mikalson got the second into the box on a cross.
That tied score looked like it may last through regulation and force the Eagles' sixth overtime game of the season. However, another quick bunch of goals radically changed the score line with about 20 minutes to play.
Both of these goals came from one of Brunelle's immensely talented attacking substitutes as
Brittney Sayre recorded her second goal of the season and Ramirez also notched her second.
Both goals were assisted as Ramirez finished a corner kick coming in from
Kayla White and Sayre pushed home a pass coming in from one of Biola's top scoring threats
Samantha Verduzco.
The four assists in today's game helps Biola move into a tie for second place in the Golden State Athletic Conference in total assists.
After the Eagles pulled ahead by two the San Diego Christian side tried everything they could to climb back into it by substituting nearly half the field worth of new players into the game, but they couldn't get anything done against Johnson.
The win moves Biola to 10-1-3 overall and 4-0-2 in GSAC play. The Eagles currently sit in first place in the conference at just one point ahead of No. 2 Westmont who doesn't have another GSAC game until Saturday. The Hawks fell to 7-5-1 (2-4 GSAC).
Biola's next outing is its senior night this Saturday. Biola hosts Hope International (9-2-2, 3-2 GSAC) at 7:00 p.m. The first 75 students in attendance will receive customized Biola soccer scarves.
