One Run And Done

Biola offense couldn't find the gaps in the Vanguard defense, resulting in just one run and a 4-1 loss.

Micah Beyer had a solid 3.2 innings of work, serving as a bright spot in this Biola loss.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was beautiful weather, a beautiful field and some beautiful pitching by Biola in Friday's home opener, but the beauty was spoiled by an even better pitching performance from the guys in the other dugout as Vanguard took game one of this series, 4-1.

The Lions rode the arm of Sean Isaac, who went six full innings in his second start of the season and held the Eagles to just three hits and one run in 101 pitches.

"This one is on our hitters today, we just didn't make adjustments," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "Don't want to undermine the performance of their starter. He threw well, stayed out there a long time and made adjustments where we didn't."

Jimmy Gallarda got the ball for the Eagles, pitching two innings, with the plan all along being to utilize multiple arms out of the pen to get through this one.

After a hit-by-pitch, a single and a double steal, Gallarda found himself with runners on second and third with no outs in the top of the first. A sacrifice fly and double scored two within the first third of an inning before the sophomore settled in.

That double steal was a sign of the catalyst behind the Lions' offense all day long. They utilized their speed to get seven stolen bases on the afternoon, with stolen bases preceding all four runs they scored.

After the two runs and two hits in the top of the first, the game turned into a pitcher's dual, with Biola allowing just four more hits and two more runs, one unearned, in the contest and Vanguard allowing just five to Biola's offense.

The Eagles' lone run came in the bottom of the second as Tanner Swire hit a sacrifice fly to fairly deep center field and Jeremy Barth scored. Curiously enough, the Barth run came right after a double steal by Biola.

That run made it a 2-1 game, but it didn't matter as Isaac reverted right back to his lights out performance by striking out Rob Groeschell to end the inning. He had five strikeouts, five groundouts, seven fly outs and a double play in a balanced performance.

The Lions added a run in the fourth and a run in the seventh to get the game to its 4-1 final tally.

"I believe we're a better team than that," said Sullenger. "I believe we can do a better job by using what we've already seen from previous at bats. We saw a lot of base runners on opening day, and today we kind of saw the opposite of that."

After Gallarda came out at the end of the second, Buddy Brouwer, Micah Beyer, Sean Rothfuss, Groeschell and Andrew Smith each got some work in for the Eagles.

Beyer had the most impressive performance, as the freshman pitched 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run. He had two strikeouts and a walk and was going toe-to-toe with Isaac throughout his time in the game.
Groeschell also had a solid inning of work, picking up two strikeouts and working his way out of a jam after a hit-by-pitch, throwing error and sacrifice had a runner on third base with one of the Lions' best bats at the plate.

The Eagles fall to 1-1 (0-1 GSAC) after the loss, while the Lions remain undefeated at 4-0 (1-0 GSAC). The two teams meet at Eagles Diamond for a doubleheader at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. tomorrow.

"We just have to do a little better job tomorrow of getting some guys on base, and I think we'll come out with a different look tomorrow," said Sullenger.
