Box Score HELENA, Mont. --- Biola set aside its second of four straight Montana-based opponents on Friday evening, when the No. 8 Eagles earned a 3-0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-16) sweep of the Carroll College Fighting Saints.
Â
The Saints are the tournament host, and the program entered play with a 6-4 record through its first 10 matches of the season. Tonight marked the second time in as many seasons that Biola disposed of Carroll in straight sets. Last season, the Eagles defeated Carroll during the Concordia Labor Day Tournament, but this year, Biola had to face the Saints in front of their own home crowd.
Â
The crowd made its biggest impact in the second set, when it got behind the Fighting Saints in an attempt to keep the team from going down two sets to none. The added energy, and drastically improved attack efficiency, helped Carroll work its way to a competitive set before eventually succumbing to the Eagles relentless team attack.
Â
"It was a great team effort tonight," said Head Coach
Aaron Seltzer. "We had a very focused group, and I think they got better today."
Â
With another three-set win, the Eagles have now gone three straight matches without dropping a set, and they have outscored opponents 226-159 over that span.
Â
Tonight's match was another subpar attacking performance for Biola as a team, as the Eagles racked up 21 attack errors versus 46 kills for a team attack percentage of .248, the third-lowest of the season thus far.
Â
While the team as a whole was just a bit below average, some individual attacking performances stood out. Perhaps most notable among these performances was
Britta Blaser. Blaser notched 10 kills in her three sets and hit nearly .400 on the evening, .130 better than her season average.
Â
Crissy Cunningham and
Amy Weststeyn also had strong hitting performances, hitting .400 and .450, respectively, and combining for 40 percent of Biola's kills. This marks three straight matches that Cunningham has hit above .400 for Biola in limited playing time.
Â
Biola had another strong match at the net, racking up 11 team blocks for the second time today. All 11 of these blocks were credited as solo blocks, led by five from Weststeyn. The previous game-high for solo blocks in 2014 was seven.
Â
Biola improves to 9-2 with its fourth consecutive win, and it gets to face its first ranked opponent in six games when it goes against No. 17 Rocky Mountain (Mont.) tomorrow at noon.Â
