Box Score LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Biola tie just once in all 19 of its matches throughout the 2013 preseason, conference season and postseason play. So far, in just its second match of 2014, it already has met its quota with one tie.
The No. 24 Eagles met with Marymount College, a team that is just outside of the NAIA Coaches' Poll top-25 but is receiving votes, on Thursday afternoon at Long Beach City College.
Â
The two teams netted the ball two times apiece to end the contest deadlocked and earn both programs' first tie of the new campaign.
Â
It seemed from the outset that this contest was all about Biola's offensive attack, as the Eagles scored twice in the first half and held the Mariners without any true opportunities. However, the tides changed in the second half, and a fantastic individual effort in the waning seconds of regulation ensured the game would need extra time if it had any hope of being decided.
Â
The scoring was started by a connection between
True Tamplin and
John Hanscom. Tamplin forced a mis-clearance by the Marymount defenders and setup a 50-50 ball between Hanscom and the keeper, which Hanscom forced into the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead just five minutes in.
Â
He was again involved in Biola's second tally of the half, when he crossed a corner into the box to find
Jarrett Pugh, a true freshman, who redirected the cross with the outside of his foot to earn his first collegiate score.
Â
Biola's final score came just two minutes before halftime and left them headed toward the locker room with confidence and momentum on their side.
Â
It would not take long for Marymount's direct style of play to help them break through and begin to chip away at the Eagles' lead. The size and physicality of the Mariners helped them get players in good scoring situations early in the second 45 minutes and enabled them to put one away just five minutes into the frame. It was one-timer shot that looped just under the crossbar and over the outstretched arm of
JT Addington.
Â
The next goal came in the final two minutes and wrenched the hearts out of the Eagles, as they seemed poised to keep their winning streak alive with a 2-1 win, just as they just saw the women's team do.
Â
A strong personal effort saw Marymount's No. 10, and presumably best player, dribble the ball half the length of the field and weave through three or four defenders before squeezing the ball through Addington's arms to force overtime.
Â
Tamplin had a great chance that setup a one-on-one opportunity in the first overtime period, but he was wrenched down from behind, earning a Marymount player a red card and forcing Biola to turn its scoring chance into a free kick that went for naught. The teams ended deadlocked as Biola moves to 1-0-1 on the season and the Mariners become 1-1-1.
Â
Biola plays again on Sept. 6 for its annual alumni game at Al Barbour Field, and then hosts the University of Antelope Valley on Sept. 9 at 7:00 p.m.
