LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Andrew Smith has had quite the winding road since he graduated from Palo Verde High School in 2009, but hopes are high that he will settle into a consistent role with the Biola baseball program.
 
Smith did not play any sports in high school, but walked on at Santa Barbara City College and spent three seasons with the Vaqueros (one as a redshirt), prior to earning a transfer to NCAA DII Dixie State in Utah.
 
He spent one year with the Red Storm, accumulating 31 games played, two RBI and an on-base percentage of .300 prior to transferring to Biola heading into this year. He also played summer league ball consistently and was a member of the 2013 national champion Brazos Valley Bombers in the Texas Collegiate Summer League.
 
"I felt God wanted me in this amazing Christian atmosphere for me to grow spiritually, emotionally and as a student-athlete" said Smith. "It was an incredible opportunity that God, as well as coach Sullenger, bestowed upon me. I look forward to finishing my collegiate career on a high note."
 
Smith's most successful time as a collegiate student-athlete came during his tenure at SBCC. The utility infielder/right-handed pitcher was a two-time all-conference selection for the Vaqueros. He also received an associate's degree and academic all-conference honor during his three years in Santa Barbara. His academics were also exceptional during his time a PVHS, as he was a recipient of the High Honors Diploma and Presidential Award.
 
"Andrew is an excellent athlete and experienced baseball player," said Head Coach Jay Sullenger. "He will be given an opportunity to fill one of the open infield spots and has tools to play either spot well. His arm strength and strong bat are exciting elements that brought him to Biola."
 
Smith began classes at Biola this fall and is majoring in communications. He hopes for a career in professional baseball, followed by a career in law enforcement. In between classes and practices he will enjoy reading, bowling, coaching and fitness.
