Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Another quality start from
Garrett Picha went by the wayside on Friday afternoon as Biola suffered a heartbreaking late-inning loss to Concordia in Irvine.
Picha went six strong innings and gave up just six hits and three earned runs, but he ends up with the loss as Concordia's ace Keegan Yuhl again baffled the Eagles on the way to a 5-2 win. He improved to 9-3 on the season while Picha dropped to 4-5.
Concordia got on Picha early to tack on a run in the first inning and open the scoring at their home field. While Picha settled in after that he still allowed two more runs over his next five innings of work to give CUI a 3-2 advantage after Biola tied the game in the fifth. He was hurt by two walks and two Eagles' errors in the field.
Yuhl was mystifying Biola's bats all afternoon long with impeccable accuracy. He struck out nine batters over his eight innings of work and did not allow a single walk.
The only offense he did allow came in the fourth and fifth inning when Biola got a run in each frame.
Michael Annunziata and
Andres Rodriguez tacked on the only RBI, while
Johnny Farrington and
Sam Thorne are the players who crossed the plate.
Rob Groeschell led off for the Eagles, and he had the best day at the plate, going 2-for-4 to attempt to start the offense.
Concordia tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth off of Biola's lone relief pitcher,
Sage Poland. Poland and Picha carried the workload against a solid-hitting Concordia squad in order to save Head Coach
Jay Sullenger's bullpen arms for tomorrow's doubleheader.
The loss drops Biola to 11-33 (7-21 GSAC) and helped No. 18 CUI to improve to 30-13 (17-11 GSAC).
