Smooth Sailing

The basket seemed like an ocean as Biola's hot shooting blew past Cal Maritime for their first win of the season

Aubree Mittel and Amanda Darouie keyed Biola's strong shooting performance in this win over Cal Maritime.
Box Score VALLEJO, Calif. --- Behind a lights-out shooting performance, a far contrast to last night's season-opener, the Eagles cruised past Cal Maritime to earn their first win of the season, 74-59.

Biola must have gotten all of its misses out of the way last game. In this one, the team shot 15 percent better from the floor, 49 percent overall, and 25 percent better from three-point range, going a sizzling 45.8 percent mark. This enhanced shooting performce resulted in a whole lot more points and a clear win.

Fittingly, the hot-shooting Eagles were led by shooting guards Amanda Darouie and Aubree Mittel. The two led the team with 13 points each, and they shot a combined 7-for-14 from deep. The Eagles' offense was a balanced approach as seven players scored eight or more points, and all but one player that played more than a single minute scored a basket.

The Eagles also received some balanced performances from Annie Park and Taylor Casey. Park still has not found her shot yet this season, just 4-for-20 on the season, but she dialed up eight assists with zero turnovers in this one. Meanwhile, Casey filled out the box score grabbing eight boards and dishing five dimes from the forward slot.

Still, Cal Maritime put up a fight, scoring 30 in the first half to stay within sight of Biola's 35-point open. Cal Maritime rode Karissa Booker and Joie Camalo on offense. The two combined to take 40 of the team's 65 shots, but Biola keyed in on them and held Cal Maritime to some dismal shooting numbers. The Keelhaulers went just 27.7 percent from the field and 18.5 percent from deep. With those percentages, this game could have, and potentially should have, been a huge blowout. Cal Maritime pounded the boards for 17 offensive rebounds and was plus six in turnover differential. These factors allowed the Keelhaulers to use up 12 more possessions than Biola. However, the extra possessions couldn't overcome the lackluster shooting on one side, while Biola's shots kept falling as they pulled away in the second half.

The team's next game comes on Nov. 7. It is the Eagles' home-opener against Simpson. Biola played Simpson on the road in last season's opening game. The Eagles dropped that one meeting, 59-52.
