HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- In front of another raucous home crowd, Biola outfought, outran and outplayed an extremely talented No. 7 The Master's College squad, winning 1-0.
Amanda Lillicrop scored her seventh goal of the season roughly halfway through the first half and
Briana Williams earned her fifth shutout of the season sealing the win.
"I'm super proud of the girls," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "It's a big win. Master's is a great team, a tough team."
The game was an intense, physical and back-and-forth match featuring strong defensive work from both sides in closing down counters and pressuring ball handlers. After 21 minutes of both teams having little offense success or rhythm, Biola worked it down the line into the final third and won a throw-in.
McKenna Marmelstein sailed an extraordinary throw that played like a perfect corner to
Margaret Guadarrama. She fired it, looking for her third goal in three matches, but a full horizontal dive from the Mustangs' keeper turned it away. Unfortunately for the keeper, the save ricocheted straight to a cutting
Amanda Lillicrop who fired it into the back of the net for what would be the difference in the incredibly tight contest. The goal, Lillicrop's seventh, gives her 20 points on the season, already tying her with last season's leading point getter.
"[Lillicrop] makes the difference there and is first to that ball and tucks the ball in the net to give us the win," said Elkins. "She has been invaluable to us this season."
After the goal, Biola attempted to remain aggressive, getting some decent runs from
Taylor Venegas who got two shots on goal. The Mustangs piled on the pressure in the second half though, pushing into the box as Coach Elkins had every Eagle player cramming the final third and turning away shot after shot and attack after attack. The defense kept The Master's superstar Katie Farris, 11 goals in 11 games coming into tonight, marked the whole night and threw bodies in front of her at every touch to keep her off the board.
Briana Williams, five saves, may have been the Biola player of the game and certainly had the play of the game with an amazing, diving save to snatch a twisting shot out of the air and stymie the Mustang's potent offense.
"[
Briana Williams] had a good game. She kept her wits about her in front of the goal and had good positioning to get behind all the shots," said Elkins. "Our back line did great. They were fantastic dealing with their attack. I'm really pleased with the overall game. How can't you be pleased with that effort there and that win?"
The win over the Mustangs marks the Eagles' second win over an NAIA top-10 ranked opponent in under a week. It also continues the Eagles reign atop the GSAC and as the only team with six wins in conference play.
With 11 wins on the season, Biola has already moved into a tie for the fifth-most wins in any women's soccer season in program history. The Eagles have five more regular season games left and would need to win out to match 2004's record-setting 16 win total. However, they are winning games at a 91.7 percent clip, which outpaces 2004's program-high 84.2 percent mark.
The Eagles continue their heavily competitive conference schedule on Tuesday when they leave the "Fortress", as Al Barbour Field is being nicknamed among Biola women's soccer fans, to take on No. 5 Concordia in Irvine.
