ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. --- Biola Women's Golf packed its bags and headed to the beautiful Cypress Ridge Golf Course in Arroyo Grande, California to take part in the first round of the 2014 Firestone Grill/Cal Poly Women's Golf Invitational.
 
The Eagles had some strong efforts in the opening round to keep themselves in a good spot in a very talented field of competition. A 344 team score puts Biola in 11^th place in the 13-team field after 18 holes.
 
Biola is not in contention to win the tournament, but with some strong numbers tomorrow can definitely move up the team leaderboard. With a 20-stroke lead on the 12^th-place Idaho State team it seems assured that the Eagles will not move down at all. They are within 13 strokes of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's B team, which currently occupies eighth place.
 
"It was 70s and sunny with a light breeze in the afternoon. It is a beautiful and challenging course," said Head Coach Jane Carr. "Whitney Jammerman had a stellar performance today. After going eight-over on the front, she had a really solid back nine. Her putting was phenomenal today."
 
That putting led the senior transfer to the best individual score for Biola today. She ended with an 18-hole score of 83. She was the tops in a run of three straight Biola players to shoot in the mid-80s.
 
Joining her in the mid-80s was Jasmine Rodriguez and Sarah Paravia. Rodriguez posted an 84 and Paravia an 86. They three players currently sit 37^th, 41^st and 51^st, respectively.
 
Rodriguez had a solid round through and through, but one tough hole made a dent in her scorecard. She shot nine pars and eight bogies today, but posted one triple-bogey that set her a few strokes behind.
 
Amanda Hobbs and Lauren Van Horn were the two others to post scores for the Eagles in the first round, coming into the clubhouse at 91 and 101, respectively.
 
Northern Arizona takes the team lead into day two, shooting an even 300 in the first round. They put forth a complete team effort with three players inside the top-10. Rebecca Bostrom of CSU Northridge leads the individual leaderboard after shooting an even-par 72.
 
Play resumes at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow morning.
