Â
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- As long as it ends in winning, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Biola playing extra minutes for the third-straight game. End in a win it did, as senior midfielder
Stephen Campos booted his second career goal eight and a half minutes into the extra period to give Biola a 2-1 win over San Diego Christian.
Â
It was the Eagles' senior night as
Sava Pantic, Campos,
Michael Kute and
Alex Kincade were all honored before the match.
Each got significant playing time in the match, with Pantic and Kute playing especially important roles in an exquisite defensive performance by Biola.
Â
Kute was shutting down passing lanes left and right against a team that is stocked with skilled forwards looking for a chance to setup 1v1 matchups. Pantic had his feet dancing in the midfield all night long, picking the pockets of the Hawks in key moments throughout.
Â
"Defense did a great job tonight," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "This team [San Diego Christian] is good enough to score against you, even multiple times. However, we were never behind in this contest, and that was important defensively."
Â
Biola got the scoring started when its two biggest offensive threats,
Joey O'Keefe and
Stephen Tanquary, made simultaneous runs with just one SDC defender and the keeper sandwiched between them. O'Keefe made a quick cross just before he sprinted out of bounds and it found Tanquary to get redirected in the back of the net.
The Eagles got a 1-0 lead less than 20 minutes into the match off of Tanquary's team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Â
"We knew we needed to create a good number of quality chances," said Elkins. "Starting off with one was good, but we knew we could not end with scoring just one goal."
Â
Elkins was absolutely right. While the one goal held strong for a half an hour, a quick strike from Francisco Ramirez at the beginning of the second half knotted the score at one off a redirection of a long throw in.
Â
"That score on the long throw in knocked the wind out of us a little bit," said Elkins.
Â
It is a good thing the defense stayed strong though, because Biola's offense could not get back on the board through the remainder of regulation, despite taking 10 shots in the second half, forcing its third straight overtime match.
Â
It was the second overtime match of the night, with the men playing immediately after a 2-1 overtime win by the women's team that saw two seniors connect for the game-winning goal.
The men's team was not to be outdone, as the Eagles got a quality finish from one of its own seniors, Campos, to earn a win and improve its GSAC playoff chances.
Â
Campos' goal came off a cross from Tanquary, who earned his third point of the night, which got redirected from directly in front of the post and elicited immediate celebration from all who were present at Al Barbour Field.
Â
Biola win pushes it to 11 points in the GSAC standings, helping them distance itself from San Diego Christian and earn a better grip on the sixth-place spot. They currently sit four points ahead of the Hawks and just three points behind fourth-place Westmont with two games left to play.
Â
"This game was extra significant because we felt we needed to win this game in order to get into the playoffs," said Elkins. "Both teams were fighting for the postseason and it made it a very intense match.
Â
Biola (6-5-3, 3-3-2 GSAC) resumes its sechedule this Saturday afternoon at Westmont (7-4-2, 4-2-2 GSAC).
