LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Although the team scores may not look it, the Eagles got some surprisingly strong performances out of their swimmers and divers at a four-team meet on Saturday.
Â
Highlighting the individual performances is
Alyssa Roden, who placed first in the one-meter and three-meter dives and
Abby Blake, who got the Eagles' only new national cut of the day (200-breaststroke).
Â
She swam a personal-best 2:32.38 to finish in third place in an even claimed by a swimmer from Fresno Pacific.
Â
Biola hosted FPU, Alaska-Fairbanks and Pomona-Pitzer in a four-way meet held at the Splash! Aquatics Center.
Â
Outside of Roden,
Christine Tixier was the only other Eagle to win an individual event. She claimed the top time in the 200-butterfly (2:15.25).
Â
"We went into the meet today viewing it as a training experience, because the swimmers have been out of the water for a little over a week for Christmas break," said Head Coach
Eddie Shepard.
Â
Alaska-Fairbanks was the class of the meet, taking wins in all three head-to-head contests they faced. They did not compete on the men's side, leaving the door open for Pomona-Pitzer to go 2-0 against BU and FPU.
Â
Blake qualified for the NAIA national meet in the 200-breaststroke while dropping 3.6 seconds from her previous season-best. She also dropped time in the 1,000-freestyle, improving by nearly five seconds.
Â
She was not the only one to drop time at the meet, Shepard also mentioned the performance of
Kenny Alcosiba in the 100-breaststroke. The sophomore shaved his quickest time by nearly two seconds (1:04.12).
Â
"We are hoping to build off of this performance and begin to drop some time at our meet against Azusa Pacific and CSU East Bay next week," said Shepard.
Â
Biola's next meet is also held at the Splash! Center and begins at 11 a.m.
