Dueling Aces

Two fine starting pitchers went head-to-head, but The Master's got the edge in the conference-opener.

Box Score SANTA CLARITA, Calif. --- Garrett Picha put in his second consecutive fantastic performance on the mound on Friday, but fell just short as Biola lost in a pitcher's dual to No. 12 The Master's.

Picha went head-to-head with Tommy Kister, who went seven strong innings and held the Eagles to just one earned run. He eventually got the win as TMC scored two to sink Biola to 1-2 (0-1 GSAC) on the season.

The difference was made in the bottom of the first as Caleb Halverson scored an unearned run off a Joe Riddle single. It was one of the two runs allowed by Picha over his seven innings. He falls to 1-1 on the year, but he kept his ERA to a low 0.75 through his first 12 innings of the season.

Although saddled with the loss, Picha matched Kister step-for-step throughout the entire day. Biola had numerous opportunities to get more than its one run on the board, but two inning-ending double plays kept them off the board.

The only run scored by the Eagles also came in the first inning. Leadoff-hitter Rob Groeschell scored the run off a Boone Farrington groundout, it was his team-leading fifth run of the season.

Sam Robison hit a single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth to score Ryan Shackelford and get the Mustangs the eventual win.

Biola got another solid performance out of Bryan Castelli as the reliever came in and pitched a scoreless eighth against the heart of TMC's order.

With the win The Master's improves to 4-0 (1-0 GSAC). They host Biola for a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
