Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Despite a tenacious all out attack from the Marymount College forwards, the Eagles kept their cool throughout all 90 minutes to pick up a 3-0 shutout over the Mariners.
Â
Marymount came flying out of the gate, shooting forwards and midfielders all up and down the field throughout the first half and they managed to outshoot Biola 5-1 through the first 19 minutes.
Â
This tenacious attack created plenty of corner kicks, long throw-ins and intense opportunities for Marymount to push the ball inside the box.
Â
"They came out with so much energy and were really hardworking," said Head Coach
Todd Elkins. "Even when they were not finding their teammate in good position they pushed."
Â
While the Mariners may have outshot the Eagles in the opening minutes they were unable to outscore BU, as
Carlos Ballesteros picked up his first tally of the year by pushing in a deflection that landed directly in front of him as he stood in front of the net.
Â
"It is always good to get an early goal," said Elkins. "Carlos (Ballesteros) did a great job of keeping his composure when he got the ball and picking a good corner to get the shot off."
Â
The 1-0 lead held its own throughout the first half, but every time MC would get the ball it would be nerve-wracking due to their ability to play the ball into some dangerous places.
Â
Their intense pushing and full-throttle offensive attack seemed to catch up to the Mariners squad late in the first half when their midfield players seemed to be losing energy. However, despite the intensity of play, the MC coach only used one substitution in the first half.Â
Â
The first 45 minutes ended with BU maintaining its 1-0 lead despite trailing 8-6 in shots and out fouling Marymount.
Â
"We knew it was not enough just to defend," said Elkins. "The way they were pushing at 1-0, we knew they could tie it, so we had to go out there and get a second goal."
Â
It took a while to get their second goal, but
Stephen Tanquary was able to knock in the insurance goal in the 71
st minute, 64 minutes after Ballesteros' tally. Tanquary scored his first of the season after receiving a cross from
Sava Pantic that set him up for the score just seven yards out. His goal added to an already solid day in which he picked up an assist on the earlier goal from Ballesteros.
Â
"Some guys came into the game a little later and really helped set up the offense well," said Elkins about Pantic and Tanquary, both of whom re-entered the game just minutes before teaming up for the goal.
Â
Despite trailing by two Marymount continued to fight for every inch of the field and every second of possession, getting themselves into trouble at some points, getting pegged with four yellow cards.
Â
The tenacity helped the Mariners as they continued to see chances develop, even late in the game, as they picked up three shots late in the second half.
Â
"It wasn't really pretty," said Elkins. "You were holding your breath as they continued to put the ball deep in our box and you didn't know if it was going to get cleared."
Â
All the chances did get cleared though as
JT Addington picked up his second consecutive shutout and blanked the Mariners with three saves.
Â
BU's third goal was scored by
Daniel Chew in the 76
th minute from an assist by
Alex Kincade; it is Chew's fourth goal of the year.
Â
"As a team we recognized that they would fight for everything," said Elkins. "They tried to knock us off balance, but our guys kept their heads. You have to be able to do that to win."
Â
The win moves the Eagles to 3-0-0 on the year and drops MC to 2-1. They face Oklahoma Wesleyan Friday at 7 p.m. at Al Barbour Field, the last of their four game home stand.
