Todd Elkins got to try a lot of new things with his talented women's squad on Saturday as they took on the University of Antelope Valley at Al Barbour Field.
The squad entered the day 3-2 overall, looking to build upon some recent success they've had in two straight home wins. Build they did, as they outshot the Pioneers 56-1.
The Eagles had an advantage over the young UAV squad in that they had 22 players see playing time in the game, compared the the Pioneers' 14.
"They have a really new program," said Elkins. "We have an advantage in numbers, and you could tell they were all just getting really tired from playing a lot of minutes."
Elkins does have a large roster, and he was able to use a lot of it, spreading minutes around well in Biola's 9-0 win over UAV.
Briana Williams was the only player on the Eagles' roster who logged 90 minutes, and she did so on her way to her second shutout of the year. She improves to 3-1-0, and only had to face one shot on goal to get the win.
Elkins tried a lot of different combinations of playing on the pitch, having 15 women put in at least 35 minutes in the game.
Three of those 15 players,
Margaret Guadarrama,
Jessie Burns and
Chrissy King, scored two goals in the game, accounting for more than half of the Eagles impressive goal output.
The other three goals were notched by
Morgan Aukshunas,
Victoria Dalla Zanna and
Miranda Starbeck.
"We were able to move the ball around from side to side and create a lot of open chances," said Elkins. "We got to try a lot of new things and it was helpful to some of our younger players."
Elkins was positive after the match and praised the performances of all of his players, but insisted their was still more to improve on as they ready themselves for conference play which begins at the start of October.
The win moves BU to 4-2-0 with two non-conference games left to play, and drops the Pioneers to 0-4-0.
The Eagles next take the pitch Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. against CSU San Marcos.
