LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Chelsea Janzen, Alexandra Sciarra, Peter Stacy and Rachel Stump are the newest Eagles to be honored by the College Sports Information Directors of America and Capital One Academic All-American program.

Each season, the CoSIDA partners with Capital One to honor the top student-athletes in the nation for their academic and athletic achievements.

Janzen, Sciarra, Stacy and Stump were each named to the third team in the Academic All-America college division.

These achievements represent the academic focus of Head Coach Jonathan Zimmerman.

"These four student-athletes are a great representation of the team as a whole," said Zimmerman. "The goal certainly is to keep your priorities straight. Academics takes precedent and then be the athlete."

These four, all members of the track and field team, give Biola a total of nine honorees for the 2012-13 season.

They join Scott Hayes (soccer), Chris Stutzman (swim/dive), Benji Sutherland (baseball), Christine Tixier (swim/dive) and Nick Turner (baseball).

In order to be named to the Academic All-American team the athletes must first be named CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District first team and have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above.

Janzen, a junior from Clovis, Calif., ran the 5,000m and 10,000m races for the Eagles this year. Most recently, she finished sixth in the 5,000m and eighth in the 10,000m at the Golden State Athletic Conference Championships. She earned this honor while studying studio arts.

Sciarra, a junior kinesiology major, resides in Orange, Calif. She holds or shares five school records; two individual records and three as a part of a relay. She, along with Anika Gasner, Alicia Hoverson and Kellian Hunt, set the school record for the outdoor 4 X 800 relay on April 26.

Stacy is Biola's all-time record holder for longest javelin throw. The senior biochemistry major set the record April 20 at Soka University with a toss of 57.99m. He is also the 2013 GSAC javelin champ, tossing a 56.52m at the GSAC finals. Stacy was also named to the Academic All-American third team in 2011-12.

Stump also earns her second consecutive Academic All-American third team honor. She had one of her biggest days of the year on March 20 at Redlands. She finished a close second in the 1500m and placed sixth in the 800m. Stump also placed 14th in the GSAC in the 5,000m.

"All (of these athletes) were all-conference and major contributors to the success of the teams this year," said Zimmerman. "All four have different majors which I believe adds to the tapestry of the team as a whole."

This year's nine CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Americans gives Biola a total of 23 honorees since the inception of the Academic All-American program in 1952.
