LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola seniors Nick Turner and Benji Sutherland added more honors to their already impressive haul as the pair was named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-District VIII College Division team on Friday. The honor is selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and academically.

Just days after the pair was selected to the All-GSAC team, they were honored for their work on the field and in the classroom. Both graduate this spring from Biola and are hoping to begin work on Master's degrees from Biola's Talbot School of Theology in the fall.

Sutherland, who earned all-district honors as a junior last season, repeated the honor after posting a 3.86 GPA in pastoral ministries. The senior outfielder from Orange, Calif., also was a star on the field, posting a .344 batting average with a team-high 65 hits. He added 35 runs, 34 RBIs and was 7-for-9 in stolen base attempts all while striking out just 12 times in 189 at-bats.

Sutherland also led the team with 19 multi-hit games and had a team-best 13-game hitting streak midway through the season. He played impressive defense as well, recording three outfield assists and making numerous difficult plays from the centerfield position.

Turner wraps up his time at Biola with a solid 3.54 GPA while working toward a degree in journalism. He was also one of the conference's top pitchers, posting a 9-5 record with 3.14 ERA in 15 appearances. His 100-1/3 innings pitched were among the tops in the conference and he led the GSAC with an impressive 85:18 strikeout to walk ratio.

Turner, who hails from Palos Verdes, Calif., threw six complete games out of 14 starts including three shutouts and also added his first career save. He also held opposing hitters to a .250 batting average.

The college division first-team is comprised of the NAIA, Canadian and junior colleges in Washington, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Alaska and the 13 provinces and territories in Canada. To be nominated for all-district consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale). No athlete is eligible until he or she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing and has spent at least one year at the school.

As members of the district's first-team, the duo now appears on the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America ballot, which will be announced around May 20. A school record 10 Biola student-athletes earned Academic All-America recognition last year and 15 have been honored overall.
