Turner, Thorne Pace Biola to 9-4 Win at Arizona Christian

Nick Turner
Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. --- Nick Turner picked up another win and continued his dominance of the GSAC while Sam Thorne continued his hot hitting to lead Biola to a 9-4 win at Arizona Christian University in the first game of a three-game GSAC series on Wednesday in Phoenix.

The Eagles improve to 20-15 with the win and moves into sole possession of third place in the conference at 12-13. The Firestorm drops to 18-14 and to 11-14 in the GSAC.

Turner, who was pitching on short rest after beating Westmont on Friday, picked up the win despite his numbers not being as strong as usual. He did earn the win to move to 8-2 on the season, going 6-2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Thorne continued to hit well, going 3-for-5 with a two-run home run to pace the offense. Thorne now has 11 hits in his last 14 at bats.

Thorne's home run in the fourth inning accounted for the first runs of the game, giving the Eagles an early 2-0 lead through four.

Biola would add three more in the fifth inning. Michael Chriss singled to open the inning--one of three hits for the sophomore on the day. One out later, Johnny Farrington drew a walk and Paul Slater followed with a single to drive him Chriss while an error advanced both runners 90 feet. Vinc Lawrence then hit a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 and Benji Sutherland's double brought home Slater to give Biola a 5-0 lead.

The Firestorm got a run back in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single and triple to open the inning. But Turner held strong and got a pop out and his only two strikeouts of the game to strand the runner at third.

Biola blew the game open with four runs in the seventh inning, capped by a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Lawrence. He would then come around to score on a sacrifice fly by Sutherland and Biola led 9-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Turner ran into trouble in the bottom of the seventh as Arizona Christian scored on a single, a triple and a sacrifice fly made it 9-3. However, needing just one more out, the Firestorm followed with a pair of singles and a double to put runners at second and third with two outs, chasing Turner. After a walk loaded the bases, Bryan Castelli came on to get a ground out and end the threat.

That would be it for the scoring as the Eagles' bullpen held off the Firestorm over the final two innings for the win.

The two teams return to the field on Thursday to conclude the GSAC series with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
