Biola Downs Cross-Town Rival Whittier College, 13-4

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was a bit of a sloppy game for both teams but Biola was able to overcome with 13 runs on 13 hits over the nine inning-game to pull out a 13-4 win over cross-town rival Whittier College in a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 13-9 on the season while the Poets drop to 7-5.

Vince Lawrence, Benji Sutherland and Michael Annunziata each collected three hits on the day.

Sophomore David Schwab got the start and ran into a little trouble in the top of the first, allowing two unearned run in the first inning.

But the Eagles got those two back and three more in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Lawrence was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single by Benji Sutherland. After a walk to Nick Oddo, Sam Thorne drove in a run with a single. Michael Annunziata then drove home another with a single and another two scored on a pair of errors on the same play.

Biola added another run in the second as Sutherland drove home Lawrence with a single.

Oddo plated two more in the fourth with a double which scored Sutherland and Lawrence who had led off the inning with singles.

After Whittier got one run in the fifth, Biola tacked on four runs in the sixth to break the game wide open. After Oddo reached on an error to open the inning, Throne walked and Annunziata hit an infield single to load the bases. David McNeill hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the first run and a walk, passed ball and a sacrifice fly by Paul Slater made it 12-4.

Kona Olson led off the eighth with a double and scored on a single by McNeill to cap the scoring for the Eagles.

Schwab went five innings, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out six to earn the win and move to 2-1. Garrett Picha pitched two shutout innings, allowing just one hit while J.T. Mickelson closed out the game with two solid innings.

Biola returns to action on Friday, opening a three-game GSAC series against Vanguard University at 2:00 p.m.
