Biola Edges Arizona Christian 5-4

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola picked up its first GSAC win of the season with a close match against Arizona Christian, winning 5-4 in a conference match on Friday at the Biola Tennis Center.

The Eagles improve to 2-4 and to 1-3 in conference play while the Firestorm fall to 3-6 and to 1-1 in their first season as members of the GSAC.

Biola got easy wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles as Arizona Christian was down to just five players for the trip. However the Eagles were able to get three other wins in singles play to pull out the victory.

Biola fell behind 2-1 after doubles as Arizona Christian won 8-2 at No. 2 and narrowly edged out a 9-8 (10-5) win at No. 1.

Rodric Pence had an easy straight-set win at No. 5 singles, beating Geoffrey Leu 6-0, 6-0. to tie the score, but the Firestorm won at No. 2 and No. 4 singles to take a 4-3 lead.

The final two matches went three-sets and were thrillers. At No. 1 singles, David Mossman lost the first set 6-4, but rallied back and took the second set 7-5. He then cruised to a 6-3 win in the third set to tie up the match at 4-4.

The match came down to the battle at No. 3 singles between Biola's Brandon Chang and ACU's Tyler Cawthorne. Chang won the first set 6-4, but lost a 7-6 tiebreaker in the second set to force the third. However, Chang bounced back and took the third set 6-4 to win the match.

Biola returns to the courts on Tuesday, hosting Hope International University in a GSAC match at 2:00 p.m.
