Eagles Keep Pace With 4-0 Win

Biola remains tied for third place in the conference with a 4-0 win over Hope International

Joey O'Keefe (9) had the hot foot tonight, adding two tallies for the Eagles, leading to the 4-0 win over Hope International.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Although No. 22 Biola entered the game with the advantage on paper, the player never saw it that way and prepared with great respect for Hope International's talented attackers, and that preparation made all the difference in the Eagles' 4-0 win on Tuesday night.

"I liked how the guys came out, they were so focused," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "They had a lot of respect for Hope International, who is better than their record reflects. The guys really worked hard to prepare, especially on defense. A lot of this win came from the approach to the game, the guys realized we had to work hard and work together."

Biola needed to work hard to form a tight defensive wall that would prevent any of the Royals forwards from getting in a one-on-one matchup with them, as HIU had four individual scorers with multiple goals this year.

The defense succeeded in its approach, allowing just eight shots to the Royals, and most of them from very far out, as only three shots taken were on goal. JT Addington got his seventh shutout of the season by scooping up all three of those shots on goal to get three saves.

After trading possession and neither team setting up many quality chances early Joey O'Keefe broke the ice in the 22nd minute with his fourth goal of the season. The sophomore midfielder was at the end of a long cross from Carlos Ballesteros, and he booted it in, giving Ballesteros and Carlos Cristhian Aparicio the assists.

That was the only action of the first half as the Eagles led 1-0, holding HIU without a shot on goal through 45 minutes.

Daniel Chew picked up where he left off in BU's last home game, scoring the next two goals. He now has five in his last two home games and 13 on the season. Both goals came unassisted off deflections and left the Eagles up 3-0 in the 52nd minute.

"We had to defend a lot of free kicks, and we did," said Elkins. "We got our chances too, and some of those turned into goals."

The fourth goal of the game came off of one of those chances, as Biola got a chance to knock a ball in after a corner kick. After the ball bounced around in the box a bit an HIU defender booted the ball to clear it, instead he found O'Keefe who redirected the ball into the net for his second score.

After BU extended their lead to 4-0 the Royals continued to press to attempt to create opportunities. While ultimately their attempts turned up empty HIU was able to get off three shots after going down by four.

"We have to give credit to Hope International for continuing to play hard even after going down by a few goals," said Elkins. "They were still working hard and putting pressure on the ball so we had to get rid of it quick."

The win improves the Eagles to 10-3-1 (4-3 GSAC) and helps them keep pace with Westmont, who also won tonight, to stay tied for third in the GSAC. The loss keeps HIU at the bottom of the conference with a 3-11-1 (1-5-1 GSAC) mark.

Biola travels to Concordia this Saturday for a clash with the conference-leading Eagles at noon. Women's soccer will be at Al Barbour Field tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. for a match with Hope International.
