San Diego Shutout

Biola was on the wrong side of a 2-0 shutout in today's loss on the road to San Diego Christian.

Miranda Starbeck, Margaret Guadarrama and a few others had some chances, but no scores for the Eagles.
Box Score EL CAJON, Calif. --- One really early and one really late goal buried the newly crowned No. 23 Biola Eagles in San Diego on Wednesday afternoon as they fell 2-0 to San Diego Christian.

The Hawks came out with something to prove after being completely left off of the newest National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics rankings.

Prove it they did, as they came out and attacked early, looking to set up any sort of opportunity they could. What they found was a chance off a rebound from the first shot of the game.

Chantel Louden took an opportunity off a free kick that clanked off the crossbar and bounced directly to her teammate Vivian Oray who knocked it in for her second score of the season just over two minutes into the game.

Immediately that put the Eagles in a position where they had to press more offensively as they played from behind. The two teams traded chances for the next 20 minutes until Biola had its best set of opportunities in the first half.

"Their defense played better than ours," said Head Coach Todd Elkins. "We gave the ball away a lot and did not deserve anything more than what we got."

Miranda Starbeck was able to find some space through the SDC defense and put two solid shots towards the goal, but neither could find the net. A foul by the Hawks set up another opportunity for the Eagles who had a good look at the goal off a Margaret Guadarrama header, but Sandra Castro, the Hawks' keeper, turned the chance away.

That would do it for the scoring in the first half, as Biola entered the locker room trailing for just the second time this season.

Period two played much like period one as each team battled to find the net, but neither having much luck until Biola had another flurry of chances at the 77 minute mark. Amanda Otto and Victoria Dalla Zanna each had two quality chances that could have found the net if not for the work of Castro, who picked up her fourth and fifth saves of the day.

"We created a few decent chances but just could not score," said Elkins. "Our best chance was when Victoria (Dalla Zanna) had a point blank one-on-one with their keeper, but it got blocked."

As Biola was building up pressure on offense, the forwards of the Hawks were looking for any way to break through the Eagles rock solid defenders. Just after BU's two chances Zoar Gonzales found a way to break through the back line and scored the clincher on a breakaway in the 80th minute.

The Eagles could not get a single shot off after the second goal was scored and fall to 7-5-1 (1-3-1 GSAC). The Hawks picked up their first conference victory to improve to 7-4-1 (1-3-1 GSAC).

Biola takes the pitch again on Saturday to square off with No. 6 Vanguard in the Lions' first real home game of the year.
