PHOENIX --- Up against one of the top teams in the NCAA Division II ranks, Biola's swim team put together a solid performance on Saturday afternoon at Grand Canyon University.

The finals scores were a bit lopsided, though GCU is expected to challenge for the NCAA Division II National Championship in March. The women's team lost 163-83 while the men fell 183-54. However, Biola put together some solid swims all around.

"Considering that we are coming off of three weeks of hard work and competing against one of the top DII teams in the country, I was very impressed with how the team performed," said Head Coach Eddie Shepard. "Most everyone was close to season-best times, and looked very strong in the water. I think it was a great step in preparing us for our conference and national meets coming up next month."

Freshman Abby Blake had a strong showing, finishing first in the 1650 with a school record time of 18:00.32. She bested her previous school record by nearly two seconds. Blake also took second in the 500 free at 5:18.89.

Sophomore Christine Tixier finished first in two events, winning the 200 fly in 2:08.89 and the 200 IM in 2:13.71.

Angela Kirschner placed second in the 100 free (55.50) while Megan Nerud took second in both distances of the backstroke, finishing the 100 in 1:03.16 and the 200 in 2:17.71.

On the men's side, Eric Sirjord took home top honors in the 1650 free with a time of 17:08.90. Brandon Hughes then followed that with a victory in the 100 back, touching the wall in 55.81.

The Eagles head back on the road next week, making the long drive up to Fresno for a dual meet against Fresno Pacific University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
