Cabuling's Late Strike Lifts Biola Past Pomona-Pitzer

The senior scores her second goal in as many matches

Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola senior Katie Cabuling bent a free kick over the wall, past the diving goalkeeper and into the back of the net in the 72nd minute to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Pomona-Pitzer College in a non-conference match on Saturday night at Al Barbour Field.

The Eagles pick up their second-straight win to level their record at 2-2-0. It was the first loss of the early season for the Sagehens, who fall to 1-1-0.

Cabuling has scored nearly identical goals in two straight games now, taking advantage of a free kick just outside of the box. After a foul was whistled on Pomona-Pitzer in the 72nd minute, the senior stepped up and took a shot over the five-man wall, curling it just past the outstretched arms of the Sagehen keeper and into the bottom left corner for the lone goal of the contest.

From the onset of the game, the agressive nature of the match was clearly evident as the teams engadged in a strenuous back-and-forth contest between two strong, defensive sides. However, neither budged much.

Biola had a few quality chances in the first 10 minutes of the contest. One of the best scoring chances early on came in the ninth minute when Chrissy King broke through the defense and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper but just wide of the net.

In the course of the first half, Biola held a 6-2 edge in shots, though Pomona-Pitzer seemed to control possession. Each scoring chance was hard-fought as the respective defenses clamped down and kept the game mostly at midfield.

The second half was equally physical and hard-fought, if not more so. The Sagehens found a crack in Biola's defense in the 57th minute but had a great scoring chance turned aside by solid play on the Eagles' back line. The Sagehens could manage just two shots on frame over the final 45 minutes--none of which were on frame.

"We are just trying to get better in each game, trying to improve with working on certain things in our practices. So really it's just about being better in this game than we were last game," said Biola Head Coach Todd Elkins. "I think the biggest challenge is when they had the lead, though, and the clock is winding down--can you keep your head even when you are a little under pressure to hold onto that lead."

Briana Williams recorded her second-straight shutout win, making one save and facing four shots in the contest. However, she came off her line to thwart a number of attacks before they could fully develop.

Biola returns to the field on Tuesday, traveling to face Cal State San Marcos at 5:30 pm.

"Cal State San Marcos is a good team who plays a lot different style than us," said Elkins. "They are a lot more direct and very physical, even more so than Pomona-Pitzer. They're going to be stingy and not let you have any chances. And any game on the road is tough."
