Eagles Fall on Last-Minute Goal

Chew scores for Biola, but Eagles fall in final minute

Box Score WILMINGTON, Calif. --- Biola came out and scored early, but Marymount scored late, finding the back of the net with one minute remaining to give the Mariners a 2-1 upset win in a non-conference match on Friday night in a match played at LA Harbor College.

The Eagles, ranked No. 15 in the latest NAIA National Poll, fall to 1-2-0 on the season with loss while Marymount moves to 2-2-0.

With time runing out, Biola's defense fell apart and allowed a long pass from Viktor Ahlfren to Sergio Torres, who broke in one-on-one with the keeper and slotted it into the bottom corner with one minute left on the clock.

The Eagles were able to get on the board first with a goal early. John Hanscom fed a nice pass to Daniel Chew, who finished with a quick flick to give Biola a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.

Marymount fought back and got a goal in the 43rd minute. A highly-questionable call by the center referee gave the Mariners a corner kick and Scott Smith made them pay, scoring off the corner to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second half, Marymount dominated play and put seven shots on goal with three on frame. Biola got four shots off, but couldn't put any on frame. But it wasn't until late that the Mariners broke through and got the win.

"The match was very physical, which is not good for us," said Biola Head Coach Bryan Kuderman. "Marymount just outworked us in the second half and deserved a win as a result."

Biola looks to get back in the win column on Tuesday, returning home to host Pacific Union College in a non-conference match at 7:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field.
